shovelhead guru's

so I am in a bind, i took this shovelhead apart because it had a loose valve guide and because the top end was clattering bad. I caleaned out all of the oil passageways in everything and checked all of the tolerences. Everything checked out ok. i put a new relief spring in the pump. I had a machine shop put in the new valve guide and size it for me. So today i put the motor together and fire it and the frigger clatters more than before. now it has a hydraulic to solid conversion kit ( so the lifter, the spring then the solid insert) and adjustable pushrods. I have no freakin idea what to do. The lifters seem fine and if anything the pushrods are on the tight side and still it is clattering soo bad. So any advice would be much appreciated.
is it possible that too tight would cause clattering aswell as too loose?

thanks

Has anyone had any luck with the hydraulic to solid conversions?

If you run the rods to zero lash, you shouldn;t get noise from them, or so I wouldn't imagine.

Does it run good, but make noise?

Can you feel anything in the pushrod tubes?

Where is the noise emitting from?

I didn't like those conversion setups. They were never quiet and never stayed adjusted for any length of time.I would check to see if one of the inserts isn't binding on you.If it were my machine I would put the hydraulics back in.

You need to block off the oil passage in the lifter block.
Also the pushrods need to be adjusted so there is a "drag" on the pushrod itself when trying to turn them.

Top end noise can fool the best mechanics noise from pistons, push rods, or conn rods, can all seem like top end noise .Did you measure the piston to cylinder clearance? or look at the skirts of the pistons for damage.Any up and down movement in the conn rods? Solid lifters work just fine when adjusted correctly we use the kits with the adjustment in the push rod NOT!! the adjustment in the tappet
