Start a KH After 2+ Years Sitting?

Hello - I have a KH that was running about 3 years ago. It started as a project from my Dad, but he has since passed and I am getting back into things and taking over the project...

I would like to get it running before I start doing some things with the bike. It was running 3 years ago, but has been sitting since then.

Is there a thread already (I did search, new to this forum, but not new to forums) started that might give me some pointers? I get the basics as I have been riding for a while, but the old bike is something a little new to me... you know, kick start and all : )

Change the gas, change oil ?, do I need to change plugs?, clean the carb out?... ect

Might sound like a silly question, but do I even need the battery in there to start it up? Couple of conversations have made it seem it's not really needed...

Any pointers on getting this old bike fired up again would be great.

It is just like any machine that runs on fuel.Give it clean fuel, clean oil and good spark. If it has a magneto you won't need a battery to start it.The mag will have the plug wires coming out of the top of it.Put a file to the points and set the gap.

General rule of thumb for kick starting usually works with a couple of full choke kicks with ignition off then anything goes.Them ole machines have a mind of their own........

with above post
new fuel new plugs.
after kicking it through a couple of times with the ign off. get it on the compression stroke (lightly stepping down on the kicker a few times untill you feel it get to the place with the hardest resistance) let the kicker peddle come all the way back up then kick her through.
good luck your dad would be proud!
