77 fxe starter will stay engaged

1977 fxe shovel/4speed
need help jackshaft/starter shaft will not disengaged. once start button is pushed it will not shut down until wire removal. shaft is not bent. all electric seems to be working like it should be. solenoid? how can i test, the way in the manual does not seem right or i don't understand. how can i check the starter clutch... does it spin 1 way and not the other... if so which way? is there some kind of test that can be done. also was told about the starter shift lever worn or bent is there a way to check if operational.

What wire are you removing?
That older starters using solenoid on the primary also engage the bendix with engages the jackshaft to the ring gear. When you energize the solenoid that is what energizes the start. The problem with this is if you put enough load on the jackshaft or the bendix the starter won't stop until the jackshaft can disengage from the ring gear.

The starter shift lever your mentioning is the bendix if I understand you correctly and if it is bent or damaged it is likely your cause of the starter not stopping when you release the button. It's holding the solenoid closed.

Starter clutch is meant to turn only one way. It's designed that way so when the bike starts it doesn't over drive the starter.

Sounds like low voltage, as the solenoid will stay "in" when not enough power is there, to pull it back.

Thank you hillside. I would be real pissed if my batt was low and then my bike burnt to a crisp . I did check and voltage is good along with a new batt. Any more advice with other ideas would be greatly appreciated. By the way last night I was taken out by a suv that said they didn't see me. I might shorten my baffles because I think a louder bike is more noticeable. Guys and Gals please ware you leathers, steel toe boots, and your helmet all three helped my last night.

I have a 76 FXE and found starter alignment is key to it working properly. Sometimes a washer or shim will fix her right up....

My '79 fxef would do that. The solenoid on the left side of the bike above the primary would stick. I would pull the plunger out and clean it and it would work good till the next time. The big contact washer gets messed up also.

Hey guys thanks for all the good advise. As far as being ok... Well I'm still alive. Took some rash but I was ready for it. What gets me is now I can't ride. Thanks again and watch for Tour-rons (Tourists and Morons).
