speedo problem 78 ratchet top trans

having a problem with my speedo id doesn't work at all i pulled the gear out of the trans and spun it while hooked up to the cable the speedo does in fact turn when i looked into the trans hole i don't see anything for the gear to drive off of does anybody know what gear runs the speedo gear?i tried to remove the shifter cover to get a better look however it won't pry off even with all bolts removed,any advice would be appreiated im at a dead end

Yeah, you're missing the drive gear, or it shifted away from its home.
Be VERY careful taking the tranny top off; it's VERY easy to crack the tranny top (don't ask me how I know).
