need a little help plz 76' ironhead

A friend of mine found a 76 sporty for way cheep but it needed some bolt holes welded on the primary drive just the cover holes. Anyhow the person he got this from had already dis assembled the engine from the bike and had the primary drive disassembled from the engine. My question is this how do you compress the 2 spinngs that go inside the clutch to get the outer plate on. Any tips that do not require a specialty tool would be very apreciated.

You will need a special tool...but you can make it. Also, good reference is ironheadcycle.com

Tool is threaded rods into flat stock that screw into primary cover mounting points to compress clutch basket.

It can be done without a specitily tool but is a PITA!
I will admit I was a lot younger braver and stronger then LOL
It takes three determined guys.
One to brace the bike one to push the plate and one to install the nut.
You have to be fast and a little crazy!
After two or three time of doing this I made a compressor much like the one in oneridgidriders post. This has brought back a found memory....as one of the buddies that helped and I later sold the sporty to has passed on.
Good Luck if this is not a matter of necessity as far as time to get it back together I would recommend making the compressor!

I've done with a big jaw puller many times

BUT, it's not worth it as it a dangerous method - make or buy the tool.

I have already take a vice grips and clipped it on the stand-off by the shifter shaft. Got a big breaker bar and held it in place with my knee and compressed the springs. Kinda a tricky one, but worked. By the way I am not shadetree all of the time. Helps to know in a pinch....
