Ironhead air/fuel adjustment

On the stock carb on my 82 ironhead, there are two adjustment screws. One adjusts the idle, the other I assume adjusts air/fuel. How many turns out should I start at when adjusting the air/fuel? Looked in the manual and briefly checked online and couldnt find the answer I was looking for.

lightly bottom it out then back it out 2 turns then fine adjust...careful when you bottom it out, not to crack the carb housing...

K thanks. Wow, It was at least eight or so turns out on mine. Bike runs much better now, still needs a little tweaking. The choke acutally works right now too, before it would idle way too high when pulled out the slightest bit.

Tightening the screw makes it run more lean and backing it out is to richen it, correct?

That is correct out will make it richer in leaner,This is what I did back in the day,Start as previuos post says at two full turns out that is usually where it winds up anyway, but ride it for a while then if it seems to pop or backfire a lot turn it out a 1/4 of a turn then ride some more if it seems like it rides worse go back in a 1/4 turn then in another 1/4 turn so now you are at 1 3/4 out ride again, basically just getting a feel for the best spot for your riding style. In the end you will find most carbs sit at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 range for the best operation if your not in that range then most likely a rejet is going to be needed, but since you say it started at 8 out someone who didn`t know what they were doing was fooling with it or it has vibrated out, good luck..Tom..
