S&S Breather ?

Put one of these in the '83 when I was in there doing all kinds of stuff. Worked for a few hundred miles then sheared a key on the oil pump shaft. Fixed that. A few hundred miles later I'm getting what seems like a lot of oil through the vent hose, which I've routed as high as I can into the air cleaner. I've got around 9.5:1 compression, stock stroke and still running dino break in oil. Will this go away when I swich to synthetic for the long term? I thought the reeds were quite stiff when I checked out the valve, but what do I know. I'm surprised there's that much pressure in there. Should I consider returning to the stock style breather?

I've never owned an S&S breather. I've never heard anything good about them, either. The stock breather is plenty good enough. It works fine in my Shovelhead.

The different oil won't do anything for your oil in the vent hose. It's likely that the stiff reeds in the S&S breather are restricting the engine's ability to breathe. I always understood that the reed-style breather was for a stroker anyway.

It's likely that you've "fixed" a non-existent problem. This is not uncommon when working on Harley-Davidsons.

Just to add a note here. The S&S reed valve will not work if you are running the stock primary oil system (drip and scavenge) I use the regular S&S steel replacement breather in my 84' shovel and it works just fine.

also of note is that the reed style was not designed to work on 92 and older motors because they did not leave any option to pull oil from breather trap which the 93 and newer evos dont have and this is causing your carry over problem put in a S&S rotary style breather gear but advance it 1 tooth

What's the reason for the advancement of one tooth...? and is that for just the S&S breather

i have found with the slotted trap evac hole in the breathergear that advancing icreases bottomend vac providing less carry over, better ring seal, better oil return from the heads reducing oil consuption and longer top end longevity with far fewer oil weeps

Engine has all new rubber oil lines and separated primary. I have a S&S steel gear as a backup in case this set up didn't work out. You recommend one tooth advanced in shovels?

S&S recommends a timing adjustment for optimization...(research is a wonderful thing...)
