Question question on compression?

I`m trying to run a compression check on my 77 shovel and need to know about how much psi the guage should read? Its reading 60lbs but its not spinning very fast. I `m thinking it should be closer to 100+, but my repair manual doesn`t give a figure. The reason I doing this is she puffs alittle on one clyinder between shifts and I`m thinking its time to R&R it this winter.

Is this a bone stock engine?
May want to try a battery charger, and then check to see if both are equal.
If your seeing wisps of smoke on the gear change, a compression test may not show the culprit.

motor is stock bore& stroke. Running a Sifton 412 cam and solids. noticed some oil on the front plug so I`m thinking Valveguides?

See what the difference is when motor is warm compared to being cold stock shovel motor is about 100lbs compression if your not fouling plus with oil a little puff between shifts is not a unusual on a shovel motor stock top ends are good for about 20K miles also 1977 had no valve seals might be time to upgrade we offer every type of service for that motor

Make sure you have the throttle wide open when you are checking it! If not, you will get a lower reading...

Shouldn't be that low.Do it a couple more times and try and concentrate on the compression stroke for your reading.Your cam can throw you off too.

You can also do a leak down if you have a compressor.

No less you should be up over 120psi with.

First things first , make sure that the motor is at operating temp, Then hold the gas wide open, spin it over a few times, read the guage, Make sure you have a good guage the cheepos can be way off. Good luck Ole
