Question 72' sportster ironhead??

I am new to thebike world and am looking for a goodbike and good looking bike to start out on. I have access to a 72 rigid 1000 ironhead. but am leary because ive heard that they rattle apart so bad especially being a rigid. and that the kickstarts are very unreliable. is this possibly just a bias opinion or is this pretty much truth. mechanics are telling me that anything pre evo is a nightmare. I dont mind tinkering and fixing things every now and then but on the same note I dont want a lemon of a engine. hope someone has some good info for me. thanks
Shane

xxxflhrci is on a distinguished road
I rode a 77 as my everyday ride for 10 years. It was reliable. Had to fix something every now and then. It only had 11k on it when I got it. It now has 52k. I'd ride it anywhere, however, I have know lots of people who weren't so lucky with iron bikes. I'd save up for an Evo before risking such an old bike that probably has been hacked up over the years.

My right knee know all about the old kickers... Get a EVO, be about the same money and a lot better bike. I rode sporties for years and dont miss the kicker slippin one least bit.
Stay with shocks.Your back will like you for it after about 20 to 30 years of riding.
