Adding Stereo to FLHTPI

Ok guys, What's involved in adding a aftermarket stereo to a 2007 FLHTPI? Thanks in advance for any advise.

The most basic installation would be one that doesn't include handlebar control of the radio. You buy the headunit, speakers, HD speaker adapters (needed to mount speakers to the inner fairing) or aftermarket 6.5" adapters, and an installation kit to mount the radio (Biketronics offers one for $50; Hawg-Wired has one for $100). You simply tap a power wire and ground wire for powering the radio.

Biketronics offers a handlebar control kit for police models that allows you to retain your police bike's handlebar switches. Call Biketronics and talk to them about that and what else you'd need. BT sells compatible headunits at list price IIRC, so you can save some $$$ buying the same radio and speakers from a discounter and buying only what you need from BT for the installation and control.

Final option is to replicate the civilian wiring on your police bike. This involves replacing the interconnect harness on your bike with an interconnect harness for a civilian '07 EG and civilian handlebar switches. The benefit of changing the wiring (not difficult by the way; plug n' play) is that it makes it very simple to add cruise control, oil pressure gauge and any other electrical options HD offers.

I did the first option on my '04. Then I was given a set of handlebar switches by a buddy and fabbed my own audio harness to replicate what was missing on the police interconnect harness; bought the BT interface module to be able to use the handlebar audio controls; and, this worked perfectly for 3 years. Frankly, the handlebar controls are a safety feature IMO to avoid removing the left hand to push buttons on the radio, or look down to see what I was doing. When I did this, BT did not offer the police handlebar switch kit.

Over time I also added HD cruise control, oil pressure and oil temp gauges and did so by further modifying the bike's wiring which would not have been necessary with the civilian interconnect harness and handlebar switches. And everything worked perfectlly.

When I did my recent paint project, I bought the civilian interconnect harness and swapped out the police harness and modified wiring I'd done over the past 3+ years to provide what was missing on the police harness. In hindsight, had I known what I was going to end up with, it would have been more economical and certanly much easier to do the swap at the beginning of all theses changes.

Good luck with your project.

I have tired 3 or 4 different head units and all seem to break down due to the vibration over time (factory seems to be the only way). The cheapest way (and the best sounding to me) so far is the following combo:
Favorite MP3 player (can be a CD or tape but I change music alot) Creative Zen has a LOW distortion rate and is easy to operate going down the road.

DWG Speaker AMP: http://www.motorcyclespeakers.net/sh...9_detailed.htm

Harley Harmon Kardon speakers (grey): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Harle...Q5fAccessories

Put the MP3 player on your inner faring or handlebars, velco the amp to the top of the radio box in the faring, mount the speakers in the factory location and you are set. Quick, easy, cheap and it sounds good enough where I have it in my State Motor and my personal 08 FLHTPI. If you want I'll send up some pics.

Does this amp and speakers work with a standard sony head unit? Was curious since the speakers are 2 ohm, as opposed to the standard 4 ohm? I am sure the amp would help the usually weak output of mp3 players...
