touring seat for flhtp
i got an 05 flhtp a couple of months ago and i've been debating what to do for a passenger. i was going to just get one of the mustang seats, but she also wants the sissy bar/backrest. so, i'm thinking about a touring seat. i just moved out to hawaii, so she's a bit impatient and doesn't want to wait for the mustang passenger seat to come in if the local harley store has a touring seat in stock.
so, will the sundowner touring seat for the 05 flht work ok on my bike?
also, how difficult is it to get all of the police seat off and put the touring seat on? are there extra parts i need?
thanks in advance !!

touring seat easy to change.
I have an 06 FLHTPI . I changed out the seat with a mustang two up . I'm not thrilled with it , its a very good seat ,but it does'nt compare with the cop seat. I am thinking about getting the mustang rear seat that goes with the cop seat. You should be able to use a back rest with the harley docking kit . It makes it removable witout tools. And I was told the passenger grab rail should also work.

I still run the original air ride seat, with a mustang pillion seat for the wife. the HD quick disconnect sissy bar will work.

The police seat was gone when I got mine, but check your tank console if its shorter like the deckers any touring seat will fit it from at least 97-07,if its longer like the Road King you can use a RK seat or trim the nose off a decker seat.
Mounting sissybars and/or luggage racks or tour pacs you just install the stock brackets, they're bolt on. The rear section mounting points on the touring bikes are the same.

I just changed my FLHP-I seat over, it had the R.K. classic seat on it. not much support for either rider or passanger. After checking prices on eBay, I got the pillow seat from H.D. $30 to $80 cheaper than eBay. What a differance! comfortable and it feels right.

The Comfort Stitch seat for RK's and deckers are passenger an rider friendly with a 16" wide passenger seat and 17"rider. Just the nose is different.

changed a few seast on the flhtpi
models over the last few years. The Mustang pillion seat was OK for the wife last year when we did the cross country Posse Ride. However she did like the stock Road King seat we used on our other bike when we did a several thoudsand miles tour with that that bike. Now I have another police bike and the wife can not decide what seat to put on the new ride.
In any event over the last five years I've changed out at least six diffent conbinations of seats on various police bikes I've owned. The only thing I know for sure is that the OEM air blatter seat on the police models is by far the most comfortable I've toured with.
Any seat that will fit a 1999 through present touring model Harley can be used on a police edition Road King or Electra Glide. I've never found one that would not fit regardless of what some parts expert have said.
At the price of any of these you can not simply buy one without being concerned that it might not be the right choice. So sit on a few before you make the big buy and find out it was not the right choice.
I'll also say the E-bay has been a great resource for my various seat purchases. You just need to be patient and not over pay for what you want. Sooner or latter you can get a good deal. You can pay $ 750 for the Zeplin seat if you want to; those who wait it out might get one for $ 400.
The harded issue in the process is getting removing the OEM air bladder if you remove the OEM police seat. You need a 1/4 inch drive socket set to make the job go eaisy. The four nuts are in a very tight space and you can not remove them without the correct tools. You have to remove the battery to get access to those nuts. Also every now and then one of the nut inserts on the four torex bolts holding the seat mounting to the frame will spin and make removing the bolts a PITA. In any event changing the seat is a basic no brainer kind of task.
Bye the way one of the most challanging combination to put together is a Mustang pillion seat and a grab rail. You have to fabricate you own set of bolts to replace the OEM bolts through the rear fender that hold the seat in place. The OEM bolts are about 3/8 of an inch to short for the Mustang Seat and handrail combination.

If you're not riding on air you're probably not riding in style. I have an '05 FLHPI and many of the people I ride with envy my air ride seat for the comfort on long trips. I added the mustang matching pillon and the QD tall backrest and my wife loves it. If there are any complaints about the set up they are about the seat height, the seat is about 3 inches higher and the pillon is about the same height, not raised slightly like most two ups. HD now puts a heated 2 up version of the air ride on the '09 OC Ultra.

I recently bought a 07 Road King Police Special. Flew down to Ft. Lauderdale & rode it back to Northern Minnesota approx 2,000 miles. I have to admit the solo police seat was about the most comfortable I’ve ever ridden on – But it is butt ugly. I bought a solo Mustang seat & 11” Mustang pillion. I also put on docking gear for a sissy bar, luggage rack & touring pack. I got the taller sissy bar so the pad fits the passengers lower back verses butt level. Maybe I’m sacrificing some comfort for style, we’ll see how it goes. But I do like the lower position the Mustang seat put you in and it’s comfortable. So far so good, time will tell I guess. I got mine off ebay so I saved quite a bit of money. I do know Mustang makes a passenger pillion that matches the checkered Police solo seat. I also like the fact I can pull off the pillion for a different look if I’m riding alone. As far as removing the Police seat & installing any other it’s no big deal.
