Police riding skills

I wish my riding skills were as good as motor officers'. They are in their own way as skilled as pro roadracers or motocrossers, because they are also professional riders.

I realize that a large part of that is just being out on the mean streets every day, riding for a living, slicing and dicing with traffic and hunting down offenders.

But they also get some rigorous training. Is there any place Joe Citizen can go to get that same kind of training?

Mr. Casual, there is a course called Ride Like a Pro. They have a video and they also give lessons around the country. Do a search for them and the website has the places they will give classes at, or you can get the video and learn a lot from that. I have the video and got a lot out of that. They basically instruct slow speed manuevering, but the lessons learned apply to riding at any speed actually. It is police style instruction.

Mr. Casual,

There are a couple places that teach Ride Like A Pro, and right now the only ones that come to my mind are in Florida where Jerry "The Motorman" Palladino himself teaches, and here in Los Angeles where I teach. I've had riders come from all over the western USA to take the course here in LA. Most ride in from NorCal, SoCal, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona, however some fly in. This weekend I have a rider flying in from Denver to take the course on one of my retired police bikes. If you are interested my website is ridelikeaprowestcoast.com.

Ride like a pro

I e-mail Mark at www.ridelikeaprowestcost.com and since he was on the west side and I was on the east , he passed me on to Jerry Motorman, www.ridelikeapro.com. here on the east side.
I viewed theirs DVDs and ordered the mean streets and RLAP #5 . these are excellent DVDs on riding in general. I spent a lot of rain day watching the DVDs and in the evening you will find me in the rear lot of Wal-Mart doing the slow race and U turns, if i can I get my B/H to stand in the middle of the circle that will be next.
I have been riding since the70's (on and off) and I have learn more in the short time that I have thier DVDs then in the last umteen years.
The West coast and East coast crews really know what they are doing. If you have the time join a class if not Buy the DVDs .If you fly in Mark has a bunch of old Cop bikes you can ride.(real bikes)
I'm a customer not a Owner.

Mr. Casual, I have raced motocross for 30 years, I feel motocross definitely helps you with your riding skills. If you desire some time in the dirt, please let me know. I have a dozen friends that run motocross schools, many of which I have attended. They are mainly on the east coast and in the Midwest. Please let me know it this appeals to you.

So you get yelled at and harassed while you're trying to power a Road King through circles in a box the size of 2 parking spaces?

I'm taking the motorman class now and it's been the most frustrating, ego crushing, painful, skill boosting and incredibly fun training I've ever been through. If there is a class available to you that's even remotely similar, I'd highly recommend it.

rlap

I guess I'm going to sound like preacher but.......
I can't take the RLAP course I got the motorman's DVD and I have been during the Exercises in my head and on the bike behind Wal-mart. This is how it paid off , Yesterday I was in Harrisburg Pa on Business, I needed to grab a bite to eat, I pulled into a Burger King, A right turn off the hiway then another right turn into the parking , then , it turned in to a U turn to the right and another another U turn turn to the left. then Mrs burger in the mouth back up in front of me , had to stop just as I came out of that last U turn. did it all just the way Jerry would have wanted me to, then a left into the parking space that she left for me. I sat on the bike and looked at what I just had to do. I know if I didn't do the exercises I would have drop the bike. sure as shitten.
So take the yelling, I wish I could be there to be yelled at.

FYI

There's a RLAP instructor in North Carolina now. His name is J.D. Redmon and he teaches in Greensboro.

Here's his website. http://ridelikeapronc.com/

I heard that our motor guys have started teaching at the academy track in Golden. Has to do with third party testing for a Colo. Motor license. Think they started this spring.
