West coast noise & emissions restrictions
I was planning on a trip through the entire west coast next summer. I understand I may have emissions &/or noise problems with the law regarding my turn down V&H pipes, especially in California. I would appreciate hearing from locals on the situation out there. I have a 2008 Ultra if that matters.

I did a trip from Reno, Nevada to San Francisco and down the Pacific Coast highway to San Diego after Sturgis 2007. I was running a '04 Road King with V&H true duals with V&H Oval mufflers. They had gotten quite loud with almost 20,000 miles on them. I had no trouble in California even in some of the most noise sensitive towns such as Laguna Beach. Just be easy on the throttle in town and you probably won't have any issues.

Hi.
As far as Oregon goes, you will not have an issue. If you log on to VanceandHines.com you will find the emission notice that the exhaust you have in now CARB approve,(California air resources board). Just print out the letter pages and carry them with you, if you get pulled over, just show it to them that they are approved replacements.

Thanks for the tip. Good idea with the letter. And for the other response about going easy on the throttle, always a good idea to stay below the radar.

I got a noise ticket in Orange County Calif with my V&H Big Radius pipes. I have'nt had any hassles anywhere else, except in O.C. I got a local p.d. motor officer to sign it off. Huntington Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita, both in O.C., have been doing a crack down on loud pipes, and altered emission control systems since early summer of this year.

You should be fine with those pipes. There are a few beach city's in the LA area but other then that it's free sailing. I have been all through this state running my RB racing LSR and never had a ticket. Lived here my whole life riding bikes.

If you're heavy on the throttle looking for attention...well, you'll get attention.
However, the biggest thing cops look for out here is illegal helmets.

Not necessarilly true. That was my arguement with the O.C. sherrif motor officer that wrote me the ticket, that I was just putting at 35mph. I just came out of Live Oak and heading to Antonio to cruise up Ortega hwy. It looked (to me anyway)like they were profiling HD's. Saw the sherrif's partner red light a stock Deluxe while I was getting wrote up . Now the helmet thing is true, especially by the CHP. But I still see a ship load of people riding around with novelty helmets.
