Topgeye wants to know Dino or Syn?
Things that trigger past memories

Someone just started a thread about resetting an odometer. I didn't want to hijack his thread so I started my own.
In the late sixties I worked at a gas station that actually pumped gas, fixed tires, washed cars and did maintenance. You guys remember one of those.
One day I went to work and the other guy who worked there had a car up on the hoist. I walked into the lobby area and there were two hot young chicks sitting there jabbering away. I went into the garage to see what he was doing. He had a drill up under there going to town on high. I ask him what the heck he was doing and he said he was helping out the girls. I ask doing what. It turns out that the one girl's dad had let her take the car to a shopping mall in her town. Between the two of them they decided to cruise around some. For some unknown reason they ended up in our town which was 50 miles away from theirs. So she didn't want to get in trouble at home for putting a bunch of miles on it. So she stopped at our place.
So guys being guys and hot chicks being hot chicks he had the bright idea of turning the odometer back for her. He had taken the speedo cable off the transmission and put in the drill and hammered away. I had to yell at him while he was doing it because of the damn noise. But he finally picked up on me telling him that was ilegal and he could go to jail for doing it. He got so shook up that he got the cable in a bind and it broke off about half way up. The station owner came in about that time and popped like a balloon. He sent me down to the local Ford dealer and with pure dumb luck they had one that would work which they trimmed to size. All went well and we put it back together and it worked.
Before the owner would let the girl have the car back he made her give him her home address so he looked at the registration and wrote everything down. She wanted to know why and he said just for the days work file. Turns out he later sent a letter to her dad filling him on what had taken place with a profuse apology and offer to pay for any damages that may have happened. The guy actually came down and talked to the owner and thanked him for being honest and didn't cause any problem for my boss. When the guy left my boss rubbed his hands together and proudly said "now that's how you cover your ass". The guy who did it never got fired. The boss just said never again or you're history. That guy had as much luck with the hot chicks as he had with the speedo cable.

Today's hot chicks can turn into tomorrows shrieking ex-wives....but it is impossible to explain that to a hormonaly challenged young person. Dont ask me how I know...

I worked at one of those stations too- a DX.

I remember windshield washing being, on average, much more fun in the summer than in the winter. It had something to do with those same hot chicks, and the differences in the way they dressed for the seasons; miniskirts and bikinis vs jeans and coats.

I worked at a gas station grocery store in Greenbank, NJ. It down the road from Batso St. Park and the public boat launching ramp. I forget my pay, but the lunch was a free hoagie.
I pumped gas and soon bought mirror sunglasses. The gals came with boat gas tanks to be refilled. They wore bikinis, topless, naked. Those were the days. Too bad they didn't shave back then.

Yes Joe it was a lot of fun. I remember that was when Deet first came out. I sat on a bench in shorts and a t-shirt watching the customers beat the skeeters off themselves. We sold a bunch of bug spray that summer.ha ha.

I worked in one, too. But not by choice. My dad bought one when I was 12. Worked there until I was 16. Then he got rid of it.
