We had a pair here. The fact they were doing it in front of the help wanted sign from Walmart was odd. Only cash. No job offers.

Funny part was when someone followed them and they got into a brand new explorer to keep warm as this was in the colder months.

I used to run panhandlers off all the time before I retired from the police department. I got shut down because they do have a legal right to beg as long as they're not aggressive or standing near a bank machine. I should say, that's the case in Indiana.

Ask what burger they wanted and he said closest place. I filled my RK and his van, he gave me $4.43 and we rode down to MD's. I asked want do you want, and just a burger was the answer. They got XLG everything. I might just have pissed away 42 bucks but the rest of the ride was great. He got his $4.43 back
Yeller...good on you! Had a guy broke down in a Home Depot lot recently and needed $22.00 to have enough for a tow back to his town. I had $21.00 in cash on me, which I gave to him. Many times I DO give a couple of bucks to a panhandler. They way I look at it, I can afford to give it, and it may truly help someone. Yes, I may be getting taken too, but I am jaded about enough things, don't need to add them to my list.

Best 'sign' Every

Several years ago I was working in NYC. One night on 7th AVE in Manhattan I saw the most imaginative sign ever. It read: Need Money for Kung Fu lessons so I can get my wife and kids back from the Ninjas who kidnapped them.
I gave that guy $2. as he entertained me.

I think that's the case everywhere now due to a USSC ruling. It's really picking up in northern Virginia. I'm even seeing an increase of individuals who are clearly not homeless standing at stop lights scamming people.

It's not up to us to judge if a person actually is deserving of a donation or if they actually need the money or for that matter what their intentions are. People are so cynical these days...if you can afford a couple bucks give it...if your that jaded then don't. Thank your lucky stars you don't have to resort to relying on the kindness of others to make it...."there for the grace of God and all".

I have buddies borrow a few bucks, I give it knowing they try. I have never asked for it back, way I look at it if I can afford to give it, then give it.

Got some experience, I've been homeless, no bragging, cuase it sucked was sad and embarrassing. I was young, 9 years old. Everything from stretch Armstrong to my bike was left behind. Pop just left everything at the house we rented on fares ave.

Me and my 2 brothers stayed here and there on weekends with friends, during work week it was the car or sometimes a motel room if mom and pop got money for that (how ever) we was homeless becuase pop was a drunk for a long time.

I'm told what straighten him out of the slump was my appendix being taken out, yea we all didn't see that one coming. Pop was sober for 3 years after that.

Stuff is a trip for me looking back on it.

I live in Durango CO. We are a tourist town. We used to have a no loitering law that was used to keep out the pan handlers. Then the ACLU sued the city and the law was repealed. Now we have beggars everywhere. We used to have lots of benches downtown but they have been removed because the homeless would use them all.

My co-worker has a son that is old enough to get a job. She dropped him off downtown to look for work. After only a couple of hours he called her saying he got a job. It wasn't quite as easy as asking others for free money. He had to actually work for his money. Some panhandlers would never go that far to get money.

It's too hard to tell the people that really need money from the ones that want handouts without working for it. Give to charities such as the shelters. People in need should be able to find places that can help.
When you give to a charity you can easily check them out to make sure you aren't throwing away your money. If you get an anonymous phone call saying "we are a charity. Can you please donate to us?" You would never (should never) give them money if you don't know who they are. That's exactly what it's like when a beggar asks for money. Who is he? Will he use the money for food or beer? Does he already have enough money for essentials?

This "preacher" can certainly cook a lot of meals at his very modest home.
