Merry effing xmas to me
Found out late last night my storage unit burned. Lost several thousands of $$ in furniture and electronics I had stored there until I could finish my house renovations... Doesn't look like any of it is going to be salvageable. Most of it was just stuff that can be replaced, we did lose some sentimental value items from wife and my daughters childhood though that can't.
We didn't have insurance and not sure if their insurance will cover any damage, seriously doubt it. Rumor has it someone was living in one of the units, possibly started by a space heater. All I can say is I'm glad it wasn't our home... c'est la vie

Sorry about your stuff but the above quote says it all. It wasn't your home and you weren't in it. Try your home owners insurance, you never know.

Homeowners should cover it - even covers stolen / damaged laptops when the kids are at college so why not personal items stored at a facility?

First off, sorry for what happened. I have an old camper I put on a lot at the river every summer. My insurance agent says because of it's age, insurance wouldn't pay much for it if it burned or was stolen. I ask about my fishing gear and TV and items I always leave there. He said my homeowners insurance would take care of that.
I don't know how this works beings it isn't at my home but he says it will cover all contents. Just hope it doesn't happen so I have to find out.

well the good news is my Home Owners Insurance covers up to $4K in losses. That takes some of the sting out of this whole mess...

So you are paying for a storage unit every month and they are not insured and bonded? Sorry, I don't know how storage units work, I have a shed on my property that I store stuff in. Just wondering why they wouldn't be responsible for the items, if you were paying them to protect and keep them for you. Really not trying to be a dick, just do not understand.

no the way it works, at least not in this state, their insurance covers loss or damage to the building but not the contents. You either have to buy a separate renters policy or have a home owners policy..

ok, That doesn't seem right, to me. But Man, sorry to hear about your loss, and thanks for the clue in. Glad the Home owners will cover some of it. It can only get better from here..

First off, sorry for your loss of items and the struggles of replacement. Secondly, you might talk with the owners/management about their negligence of "allowing" someone to live in one of the units causing this issue. If you could prove they knew of this issue, you would be much better off in negotiations......

I do not know the laws in your state, but most states I am aware of do not permit anyone to live in a storage space. So if someone was in fact living in one and the storage place let them, then they would be on the hook for any loss you have incurred.
I suggest you talk to a lawyer.

turns out that was only a rumor, the person responsible was not living there...

we got to sort through the wreckage today, by some stroke of luck the boxes that had the majority of the sentimental value items survived. Everything else was destroyed. Now it's time to tally up the loss and submit an inventory to the insurance company to see how much they will reimburse me. I have a feeling $4k is going to fall very short...
