Lincoln - the movie
Spielberg's "Lincoln" is due to sweep the box office this weekend. Based on a book by Historian Doris Kearns-Goodwin, the movie is focused on the aftermath of the war, choosing only the final chapters of her book for the film.
I won't likely get a chance to see it this weekend, but hope to catch it eventually.
IMO, all good attempts to help educate Americans on their history are worthy, hopefully this attempt will live up to the hype. Goodwin and Speilberg are self-proclaimed liberals, so there will no doubt be an element of that in the film, there's nothing wrong with that so long as it doesn't cloud the facts in favor of the slanted narrative.
The film is centered on the supposed contention between the President, his Cabinet and congress in trying to pass the 13th Amendment, but it shouldn't over dramatize the fact... after all, the south was defeated. The democrats were crushed by the sword, not by the ballot box. Lincoln's battle was against his own constituency not against the democrat party. Based on the trailers I've seen, I think that fact may have been overlooked...but we'll have to see..
If you see it, let us know what you think...

I've been looking forward to seeing it. I'll probably wait a couple of weeks since I don't like to wait on lines at theaters and I think this is going to be a big hit.

I think I'll wait a while, reviews are not complimentary. That and Daniel Day Lewis is a little too over the top for me.

I enjoyed the movie. I had difficulty with the realism of the opening Civil War battle scene but I guess that was what it was like, horrible. I can't imagine what it must have been like for them to be a part of that horror. The rest of the movie was an interesting study in politics and politicians. It reminds us what it is actually like to be a politician and what a difficult job it is. Lincoln's family relationships was also interesting. I recommend the movie and I don't recommend many movies. I would give this 3 1/2 stars.

how did that opening battle scene compare to the opening scene in Saving Pvt. Ryan?
How did this flick compare to Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies or Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter?

I thought it would be boring, too. I find most movies to be boring. And this one was 2 1/2 hours long. Yet for some reason for me the time passed quickly seeing this movie. Very surprising. I thought it would be too long and boring. The realism of what life was like in the 1960's was also fascinating.
It also reminded me of the possibility that this all could happen again. It has happened elsewhere in our lifetimes. People have not changed.

It was also interesting for me to see how the two parties got reversed. I would certainly have been a Republican in 1860. I didn't like the Democrats of that era. Today it is reversed for me.
