I liked Wyo's idea of posting and storing some of our favorite maps and rides here in our own little forum. I am going to start posting rides and maps here as an archive.

HD... that is the coolest map. You could start a business providing well illustrated routes replete with food stops, gas stops, amatuer stops, etc.

I wish someone was doing that around here. Great job.

Thanks 8-Ball, glad you like 'em. And yer right as rain, I am always Googling the web for maps and rides done by locals who have been-there-done-that and there are not too many out there. Sounds like an opportunity!

What is the software you are using. It has just the right amount of detail for the scale and you are obviously annotating key points in the legend. Will it work on a Mac?

Checked out your website... very well done.... man, I am starting to sound like a groupie.

I'm gonna guess you're using MS Streets and Trips?

I just picked up this program today, 8, and it's the cat's meow.

Great trips, Lux. Maybe one day this summer I'll be able to get down your way and take a ride with you folks.

Yer right, the software I've been using is Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006. It is $39 in stores and $37 online. There is no MAC version out but there is other great mapping software for OSX. It's pretty cool but at the same time hard to get used too. You can zoom to some pretty nice detail (here's the town where I grew up at a medium zoom level) I want to just trace a route and save the map but you have to setup a start and end then let it choose the roads. You can tweak it for highways, no tolls, that kind of stuff. But to get the real byways you have to go in and add "stops" or drag-n-drop the route to a favorite road, then it rethinks the route. Takes a lot of time to stop it from making stupid choices. But you get there sooner or later. Then it is easy to dump out the web page or an exported graphic.

Two NoVa Spring Roads Worth Seeing

Lime Kiln Road

First, not to make this into some sort of "Brokeback Cruisers" forum or anything but if you ride up Lime Kiln Road from Rt 15 to Snickersville Turnpike over the next few days you will see a sight that only good ole Virginee can offer up. The road winds up Goose Creek and along both banks for several miles are huge fields of Virginia Bluebells hugging the banks. The smell and the sea of Va blue is pretty amazing. Won't last more than a few more days though!

Burkittsville MD

Second, I hit the road early today while the kiddies were still snoozing and rode up Rt 15 North to 340 West towards Harper's Ferry. I jumped off on 340 on 17 Burkittsville Road and followed the sign towards Burkittsville about 4 miles off 340. Was figuring I'd do a little impromptu Blair Witch Ride. Turn left in town on Main Street and follow it up the little mountain to Gathland State park up Gatland Road. Nice little Civil War stop. Then stay on Gapland Road down the mountain til you hit Rt. 67 and then left takes you right into Harper's Ferry from the back way. The loop through Burkittsville is gorgeous.

I'll have to figure it out because I can't see it on the map, but I did this ride one day up 15 to Point of Rocks, 672 to Lovettsville, and some back ass roads through a ton of vineyards that ultimately brough me out through Hillsboro to Round Hill and then I hooked up on 7 to Snickersville Tnpk, to 50 through Middleburg, to 15 towards Leesburg to Evergreen Mills and back into Ashburn. It was like three hours and beautiful. As I was riding through the vineyard roads I was behind an guy in an older Mustang 'vert sucking on a pipe... I sort of followed the tasty scent. Great escape ride for a couple hours.

It'd be fun to throw dinner into that somewhere along the line and cap it off with a great stoagie. I'll try and ride/find the missing pieces of the route and post the map. You can throw Hapers Ferry into that ride easy across the river to Brunswick and up the river to 340.

Another great ride would be to head out 50 past Romney, WVa through the twisties up into to Deep Creek, grab lunch and come back. There are some major "tail of the dragon" switch back, up and down, challenging rides "out there." I came back that way from St. Clairsville, OH last year through Deep Creek capping off a ~1,000 miles weekend trip and even though I was 2-up and way exhausted, it was too fun.

I think it's 7W to 81S to 50W to 50/28 to 50/220 to 50 to 42 to 38 to 495 into Deep Creek. I've got a Victory friend that could hook us up at the "Yacht Club" for burgers and a beer, maybe a swim, and head back for the downhill fun. It's another beauty of a ride and exhausting for a good nights sleep. Probably an all day ride though.
