I bought the 2004 883c and it is a great bike. The only problem is that like a tattoo; once you get a Harley you want another one and a bigger one. I am already addicted and want a custom or a softtail to work on. The Sportster in a years time will be my wifes', my sons', or my second bike (*notice I didnt get rid of it). Also, as an after thought. If you are on a budget get the 883, it can easily be modified later to a 1200 and end up with better performance. If you dont like the tinkering idea and/or have money$ get the 1200.

I'm close to your size, and absolutely love my Sporty, but like 2004_883c said, you get an itch for something bigger after you've gotten used to it. I'm not planning on upgrading mine to a 1200, it has plenty of power to get me where I take it, even with a passenger but I think by the end of the summer, I'm moving up to a Fatboy. If it's your first bike ever, be careful of the weight, it's a little heavier than other starter bikes, but if you keep that in mind, you'll do fine. Mine was my first one and I've had no problems handling it. I've modified mine with forward controls, a Sundowner seat and buckhorn bars to make it a bit more comfortable for longer rides but if the stock configuration feels good, then I'd go for it.

Both members have given great advice. And it's true, once your use to the 883, you'll want something bigger and faster. After 3 months on the 883, I was lookin for a Fatboy and I'm 150 lbs. Thanks for sharing and keep us posted,
