Interesting Sturgis article

I found something that strongly reinforces my desire to avoid the big motorcycle rallies.

The following link will take you to an article written by the owner of Desperado Choppers, about their experiences in Sturgis.

I can only dream of being able to piss away $$ like this guy does at Sturgis, but he has had his fill and I can't say I blame him.

That story kinda re-inforces the phrase " it ain't the destination, it's the journey". I've been going since I retired in '91 (private individual not business trip) and I always enjoy the trip and campground stay east of Sturgis. Always a gathering of friends seen once or twice a year. Trips downtown are usually limited to one time only. Definitely not the cheapest rally to attend but I'll keep going just to see old friends. To each his own.

I was there and felt zero need to be in the town of Sturgis. I enjoyed the time I did spend in Sturgis but I could just as easily have spent it elsewhere. If the Sturgis folk don't want us, I'm sure alternative arrangements can be made!! We don't have to call it Sturgis do we? Black Hills Rally is fine with me and that leaves a lot of open ground.

i sent this person who wrote the article a very long e-mail after reading it. the reason why i did that was because even tho some of it is true, some of it is very mis-giving. the guy walked in to the grocery store after a two week long event that leaves the locals tired, and wanting to get back to normal again, and he hears this comment. i bet if he walked in there a week before that, he wouldn't have heard it. the guy was tired man. he probley worked 100 hours that week. the gal at the community center? she was tired too. the last thing on her mind was starting to worry about 2005 already. come on! it was the last day of the 2004 rally. she wanted to get some sleep before returning to a regular pace job on monday. do the locals get tired of the rally? hell ya they tired of it, but i have to say that many many people dig it, enjoy it, have fun during it. but after two weeks, they want to be able to get out of there house and drive there car to the grocery store with out it taking 1/2 hour one way. the rally has grown to huge massive people in the past 10 years, its no longer a week long event. sturgis is a small community with lots of older people, they like to get out and about have there coffee with there buddys too. personally? i love the rally, but by saturday night of the last weekend, i am glad its over too. its always nice to have your town back and get back to mayberry life

Ginger...

I read the article and it seems to me that these folks were not just tired... they were positively disrespectful in the worst way.

I don't know how many Sturgis folks feel the same way as these people did. If it is widespread, then it is horrible... a terrible ingratitude. Maybe this does not reflect the general feeling of the local people. Maybe they will have a better heart as time goes on.

But they must know that their hospitality is rewarded with our support and good will. South Dakota has incurred the ill will of our community once this year when Janklow murdered one of our people. South Dakota must not let us down again.

My $.02.
