Citing, among other reasons, difficulties in solidifying an acceptable location, Board of Directors of the Four Corners Iron Horse Motorcycle, Inc. officially announces the 2002 Rally will not be held over Labor Day weekend. Severe drought conditions this season and the recent wildfires, as well as the continuing threat of such disasters from smoking and other human activity have caused the Rally Board additional concern. The event, which has been held in Ignacio at the Sky Ute Events Center on Southern Ute land for the past nine years, has traditionally offered four-days of concerts, vendor booths, and entertainment events bringing in tens of thousands of two-wheeled tourists to southwest Colorado each year.

"The difficulties we've experienced in creating our own venue and then in creating a contingency venue are no secret," said Gary Cole, the Rally's president. unfortunate that an event of this magnitude and with this much favorable economic impact has been met with such resistance, given our successful track record."

According to Cole, the Rally Board will concentrate its efforts on locating a venue for the 2003 Rally in the southwest Colorado region and deeming the 2003 rally the official tenth anniversary event.

"We've had nine strong years of hosting a successful and safe rally," Cole added. "at this late date even if a venue was in place, there is not the proper amount of time to prepare an event that would meet our guests expectations or the expectations of our community."

The Rally Board spent the majority of the past year preparing facilities management plans to secure a site of its own. When the plans for this site fell through, the Rally attempted to re-negotiate with the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and other sites to hold the 10th Anniversary event.

"Despite good faith efforts on the part of all concerned, we could not get together on holding the rally at the Sky Ute Events Center or at other area locations of sufficient quality," said Cole. "While we are disappointed that our 10th Anniversary Rally will not be held in succession with the other event years, we look forward to announcing plans for 2003. Though the Rally's Board and parent organization will not sponsor events this year, we encourage area tourism industry businesses to welcome motorcycle enthusiasts who have planned to come to our area and lead them to the events, activities, and attractions that make this a great vacation destination."
