Rear End-er

On the way home from the dealer, last Friday... this is my trip home from picking up my new ElectrGlide by the way. I was stopped at a light about half mile from my home. I was the first vehicle at the intersection with a car on my right. It's a two lane blvd. Suddenly, I hear tires screaching for what seems like minutes. I snapped out of my initial paralysis as I imagained death approaching from by rear, hit the gas and took off across the red light intersection. About ten feet into my run the car next to me was hit and thrown about half way into the intersection and into a pole. Glass and plastic everywhere. Both cars were seriously damaged. Gladly, I didn't get a scratch. Could have been hit at the intersection (since I entered in somewhat of a panic) or maimed by the idiot behind me. So what is to be learned by this. Rear ender's are my worst nightmare.

What a close call!!
Good reflexes.
It does pay to leave her in gear and be ready.
Thank God, the intersection was clear when you made your run.

HOLY CRAP!!! Wow - I'm THRILLED to hear you were able to avoid a wreck! That scares the crap out of me just thinking about it... Thanks for posting - really hits it home that you need to stay in gear, pay attention to what's coming up behind you and be ready to roll.

I bet the pucker factor was OFF THE SCALE!

Man, you must have very quick reflexes. Not sure I could have reacted as quickly. (or if I did, there'd probably be a car crossing the intersection that I didn't take time to see).

The rear-ending car must have been coming up pretty quickly to screech the tires that long and do so much damage.

Kids?
Driver on a cellphone?
Drunk or on drugs?

Seems like its gotta be one of the three; can't imagine a mature attentive driver with all of his/her facilities plowing into someone like that.

Here's more of the proof that when stopped at lights, traffic jams, etc., we all need to develop these steps into habits...
1) Leave it in gear
2) WATCH what is behind you & what is coming in your mirrors
3) ALWAYS leave yourself an "out"...never pull up so close to the vehicle in front that you become blocked in

Thanks for posting and reminding us what happens everyday somewhere...and GLAD you reacted and made it through!

Wow, scary. It's great that you didn't meet any vehicles in the intersection!

Whenever I'm stopped I watch my rear constantly and do not even think about relaxing until I have a *stopped* vehicle behind me.

This rear-ending thing is a big concern of mine. It happens WAY to often around here. Thankfully not usually to bikes, but if I drive to work on the crowded expressway, I see a minimum of 2 per day (cages) and that is no exaggeration!

ALWAYS when stoped, keep a Break light on just for this reasion. Don't know how many times i have come up on a stop car, no break lights lit, at a stop light / sign. Think everyone behind then knowes they are stoped.

Glad you are OK. Did you go beat the crap out of the offending driver, kick the door in? Just when did they plan on stopping?

Naaa.. came back around and went by slowly to inspect the carnage and let my breathing come back to normal. The two drivers were having a pretty animated conversation. This fool may have been drunk or otherwise impared, but aside for the destroyed vehicles, it didn't look like anyone was hurt.

Whew! Glad you're allright. People drive butt ass crazy around here. I see road rage all the time and idiots talking on the cell phone not paying attention to anything else. One of them turned right in front of me today, and I damned near T boned him. Talking on the cell phone of course.

What part of town was it in?

Exactly why I constantly look in my mirrors and at cross traffic the whole time I'm waiting at a light.
Glad to hear you and the scoot made it through without a scratch.
