Brakes on at stoplight
Two weeks ago, a 62 year old biker was killed here in Warner Robins, GA while sitting at a traffic light. He was struck from behind by a van. The bike traveled approximately 330 feet after being struck.

Not knowing whether or not Delmar had his hand on the brake to keep his brake light on, it has made me more conscious of doing that when I'm stopped at a light with no cars behind me. A lot of times, I will just relax and drop my right hand, especially if stopping after a long ride. I still watch for cars coming up behind me and put on the brake if I see them.
From now on, I will probably keep the right hand on the brake to keep the brake light on.
The intersection where Delmar was killed is fairly level and he was probably relaxed. The light is a long one.
It is ironic that he was a coordinator for ABATE (American Bikers Active Toward Education).

Delmar was a good man and he will be missed in this community.

Always sorry to hear stories like this. I stay in first gear at a stoplight with my foot on the brake pedal in case I need to get out of the way fast. I also put the Bright Ass light on my bike which kind of strobe LEDs and have it set to flash 8 or so times before going steady when brake is applied. I watch behind me when I'm stopped and, if cars are coming up on me, I will pump the brake pedal every few seconds so it flashes. This is a really bright light.

Terrible thing to hear.
I always try to keep an eye behind also and flash my brake light if I see someone approaching. As hard as we try, sometimes we all slip up and it sounds like the "car behind" in this case was being driven by someone who had no clue what was happening in front of him/her anyway (brake light or none).
I must admit, I always feel much better when there is a stopped car behind me at a red light.

Been run over...it sucks, but the car that hit me would easily have run into the car in front of me. The only thing that stopped her was the tire of my bike under her bumper. It wouldn't have mattered if I had a million candlepower light for a brake light.
If the dudes bike went 330 feet, he got hit full speed and no brake light would have helped.
Sometimes it really doesn't matter...it's just your time.

I try not to sit at a light .. if there is a right azz turn Ill take it & hook up later down the road, every town has its short cuts ... It is easier to be concious of whats around us than trying to stop some DruNKinass wondering if he is out for a country ride or havin a lite show in the big city.
I like to keep Rollin'

So sad, always keep an eye on whats coming up behind, I try to keep an escape route open, and think about what it would take to use it.

Sad to hear about a good man that died because somebody was not paying attention.

I'm not familiar with the BAL, but I added a flashing LED under the tour pack. It works only with the brake light.

I put the BAL on my Heritage after I was rear ended last January. It is extremely bright and I love that it flashes. I also watch traffic behind me and reapply the brake to make them flash at the car behind me as it approaches.

these sad story's you just can't get over. we had a group of bicyclist get run over in indy a couple of years ago.
good news. i have hears that indiana is considering a bill where amotoryclist can go thru a red light after stoppinng if its clear. but i can't find the bill number on the govt. web site; so i can support it.
bottom line god bless this fellow biker & his family. lb

Bicyclist should be run over, I hate those *uc*ers. You should get paid by the state for killing them.

Being hit at a light is one of my worst fears while riding.

I think he is referring to a recent encounter he had. Search the site for "run over by bicyclist" or something like that.
