MSF Course
Yesterday I completed the Experienced Rider Course. I've been riding for about 35 years and thought I had a good handle on operating a scoot until I got about 5 minutes into the course. Found out I didn't know jack. That was probably the best money I've spent since I've been riding. If your a serious rider and you havent taken the course sign up, you might learn something that will save you life or you passenger.

Yep.
You've just found out why we are so HOT on the msf course here at the H/D Forum. The regulars here recommend the course for everyone.

Jim, there needs to be a major push in getting everyone into the course. I'm gonna start with the guys and gals I ride with. I am also considering the instructor course. Have a good one!!!

I can't say enough good things about the MSF course. I plan on doing the experienced rider course every two years. To be able to practice under the eye of the instructor and controlled circumstances is worth a lot later on the street.

Oldhippie - I'm with you all the way. I took the course last year to "keep my wife company" who was a first time rider, and I came out of it saying "how the hell did I survive this long?"
Since then, I tell everybody about it, I even carry cards around from the college where I took the course that I hand out to poeple that get interested.
Our HOG chapter has 150 members, and rides with 40+ bikes aren't uncommon, we have actually discussed making it mandatory for anybody going on a ride to have taken the course - but that's a hot topic. Our logic is good though - if you do something stupid in a group that large, you're not just going to take yourself down.
Ride Safe - and congrats on taking the course.

BigG,
Your missus (a new rider) took the experienced rider's course? WOW! I'm impressed.

Do they supply the bikes on the experienced rider's course like they do with the beginner's course or do you use your own scoot?

They supplied a bike for one rider in our class. It had been years since he had riden and didn't bring his bike due to not having his motorcycle endorsement on his license.

The ERC is designed to use your own bike. One of the ideas behind that is to learn about your bike during the course, and it works.

I'm looking forward to taking the ERC in June. It's mandatory if you want tobe a road captain in the local HOG chapter.

I took the ERC this past May 10 and laerned alot about how ot things properly. We all theoretically know ( I hope) but it is a great help to be able to practice under the eyes of an instructor who you don't know and can offer constructive criticism of your technique. Also the two Gold Wingers that were unable to complete the figure eight portion of the course o and the Wing that kept discharging its battery(had to be jumped off about 15 times. started calling it the Flintstone bike) was entertainment unto itself. This is a tough course but well worth the money and time involved. I am going to encourage all of our local CMA chapter to take the course. I am going to describe it to them this week at our monthly meeting to help better inform/prepare the riders that are going to take the course.

I'll dig this one up from a few months ago...
I took the BRC this past weekend with my wife (no experience). Only the first couple of exercises like paddling the bike were boring to me. I learned something with most of the rest.
Some of what I learned was from the other new riders. The course hopefully put to rest a lot of the bad habits I see on the street all the time. I recommend it highly for all experience levels and am looking forward to the advanced course.

I am an instructor for the state of CA and I teach the MSF/CMSP basic course and ERC. Everywhere I have worked requires the students to ride their own bikes. If anyone in SoCal is intrested let me know....I have a site that will be starting classes next week and every week thereafter through the slow winter months(like we have a winter in SoCal)
