get off my butt

i usually carry pennies in my windsheild pouch and flick them straight up in the air if someone is riding my plate. usually they back off. had a guy try to run us off the road after an episode in oregon last year. once i had a gal run me off into deep shoulder gravel when i decided to pull over for her. that doesn't work. can't ignore them for my own safety issues either. what else? slow down and motion for them to pass on a curve in the rain? finger?

A buddy of mine had a near hit with a cage. Bitch cut him off. At the next set of stop lights he pulled up beside her and spit in her face. I guess she started to cry but I bet she will think twice about cutting a another biker off.

I know some people who carry marbles just for that reason. It's cool to be all tough and all, till you flick a marble at the wrong person, who will kill you with their cage..

Yeah, throwing rocks and marbles at cars will really get them on our good side. We have enough trouble with our generic bad rep without exacerbating it.

If I sense trouble with a car behind me I turn off or pull over and stop and let them pass. The one thing I won't do is give them one more reason to hate motorcyclists.

Then there is that guy in a car with a gun just waiting................

I'm just sayin'

Do you do the same thing when you are driving a car?

Been hit from behind already I just move over or slow down and let them pass. I don't care to go through another 2 years worth of recover. Thats if I live.

Well, that would explain all the ticked off cage drivers out there then.

When I am driving, whether the bike or the truck, I do not want to tick off anyone. There are just too many crazy people out there. If another biker ticks them off they may not take it out on that biker but they may take it out on me if they get the chance. When I ride I have a good time but I am not going to let some idiot ruin my day and throw crap at them. I let them pass and I continue on. I know, it's a new concept, but it works for me.

Everything we do on the road is remembered by another driver. I would hate to do something that made someone else so mad it caused someone else to get killed on the highway. I'm just sayin'

Honestly giving them a finger is a hell of a lot better then trying to damage someone else's car. Im a biker myself but Id swear i'd freak out if someone did that to my car, you would be the one paying for any damage if you did that to me. Dont be an ass and use the finger instead of pulling stunts like that.

I once read a police training textbook which showed how to hook up rear facing shotguns on a motorcycle.

Go figure that this topic would pop up...
I was cruising to work on Tuesday goin 65 in the far left lane on I-90 & some idiot on a cell phone was so close to my ass that I could almost read his lips...
I tapped the hand brake a coupla times to let him know he was too close...No workee...
So I eased of the go handle & the futhamucka pulled right up along side of me! IN MY LANE, BETWEEN ME & ANOTHER CAR!
I looked at him in disbelief & he waved to me...WTF!?!??!?
I almost kicked his door, but I didn't wanna end up on the Jersey barriers...
What the HELL can we do!!??!?!
I don't wanna throw stuff at em...
I actually thought about selling the scoot for my own safety...

I agree with the others ol buddy, try not to react, I will admit tailgaters drive me NUTS specially when I'm keeping to the limit.

I also admit to stopping, dismounting and yelling at the f---kwit to bakoff!!

David Hough covers some of this stuff in his book on proficient motorcyling.

He makes some good points- one of which is that in your country, the cage driver may have a gun.
Over here (France) they may have a MACE canister.

The cage has the advantage. U cannot specify a safe method for evry situation/road/traffic density/type of vehicle.

BUT I think I go with those who say try to get the dickhead past u and let em go, heres wot I TRY to do:

Using my head movements to make it obvious that I have seen them in my mirrors.

I sometimes reduce my speed if I think it safer to do so BUT bear in mind this may further frustrate the tailgater

I DO NOT give up my road positioning for maximum visibility in the curves

pick a spot asap to let them thru and give em a wave (not one finger!)

I can sometimes predict a tailgater comin up by their driving and that sometimes helps cos u r prepared a little.

Tailgating and aggressive or stupid driving still gets my dander up so I then try plan B which is imagining the driver is a funny character- for me its Alfred E Neuman(waddya mean-WHO?).
Just think of some dorky cartoon character or person or whatever.

Do that when they are out of the way though- I have had to pull over a coupla times cos I was laughin so much, so be careful with that one.
I take your point about the curve in the rain, as I said above- its not always ezy- we just gotta do the best we can.
Hope there is sumtin there of use,
stay safe buddy.

Give em the finger then pull over and stare em down as they go by and let em know they have a chance to go mano a mano if they choose! No road rage, no vehicle damage and everybody goes home satisfied!

actually ac_exp, the reason i posted this is to avoid a similair incident in oregon where 2 dudes in a car retalliated. yes i gave them the look and even got off at the first set of lights prepared to give the driver a tune up. they stayed back from me and then passed me down the road, giving me the option of crashing into their brakelights, or leaving the road. the days are gone when the public gave bikers a wide berth. i am on my 9th decker and have logged 265,000 miles over 8 countries. i am not a novice, but i am too old for that sh-t anymore. oregon was totally out of character for me. maybe it was because of the initial stupid move on the drivers part and putting me in danger of crashing that sparked such a stupid reaction in me to react from my ego. i am leaving from the island in 2 weeks for another cross country trip and i still want to learn from others on how to do it safely. i am leaning towards putting the pennies, finger and attitude away though.
