Power Rangers do it again

Ok, I'm not one to rail on sport bike riders because we all like being on two wheels and now and then I like to putt around on a nice crotch rocket, but the mentality of some of these guys I just can't understand. Yea, I know it's not only the sport bike riders doing stupid things on bikes, but it sure seems to be the rule rather than the exception with them.

Other day I'm riding home and just went around a long bend in the left lane doing around 70mph. Checked the mirrors anticipating moving to the right lane and nothing behind me. Just get ready to go to the right lane and do a last minute over the shoulder check and two feet away passing me on the right is one of these morons. I would estimate his/her speed at 130+ and within seconds two more came by running faster than the first one. Shared the crap out of me simply because if I hadn't taken that last look over my shoulder things would have gotten real ugly real quick. I say "his/her" because it was so fast I couldn't get a good look at the rider.

Now I love speed and will take advantage of every chance to go fast, but there's a time and place for it.

Yeah, happened to me, too...
Couple weeks ago, I'm ridin home from work on a back road with a 40 MPH speed limit...
I had just crested a hill - where the local LEO tends to lurk - goin right around 40, enjoying a nice late summer ride...
There were maybe three cages behind me, & I had just checked the mirrors to see if any one was gonna use the passing lane...
Nope...cool...
Outta nowhere, a Rice Rocket SCREAMS past me...
Almost jumped outta my skin!
Prolly in excess of 80 with 4 more right on his tail...
ALL of em in tees & shorts, maybe even wearin flip-flops...
This road has a LOT of wildlife crossings & slow-moving farm traffic & has some hairy frost-heaves & blind driveways on the twisties...
I half expected to see bloody streaks & MC debris on the road over the next 4 miles, but I guess they all made it alive...
Like you said, I love to go fast, but that road is not one of those places...
An EMT once told me that they're known a "Donor Cycles, for good reason...

This is exactly why in our group's Rider's Guidelines I stress the following...

When changing lanes

1) Always be certain the lane is clear

2) Always make a head check immediately prior to initiating any maneuver

3) Never assume the lane is clear just because others have made the lane change ahead of you (you and only you, are responsible for your safety)

4) Never assume the lane is clear because you checked a few moments earlier
Accidents can occur because hazardous situations develop in the blink of an eye!

5) Never change lanes without a head check immediately prior to initiating any maneuver

6) Always Remember You and only You are responsible for your safety

I don't know about the donor part since I don't think there'd be much left to donate, but I suppose you could possibly salvage maybe some flipflops or a glove.

Happened again yesterday. I was heading south on the Taconic near Cold Springs for those that know where that is. Out of nowhere 10 of them came blowing by weaving in and out of traffic.

The Taconic and Rt. 9 in Dutchess/Putnam counties are prime roads for these whack jobs. Both have enough turns and hills to make for some enjoyable riding, but they are also prime areas for deer and whatever other four legged critters you can think of. Both roads also have several side entrances that aren't readily apparent and some of those are in locations where a fast moving bike or even car wouldn't be seen by someone pulling out.

I will say that if it's attention they are looking for they're getting it. Just saw on the news the other day that people are getting fed up with the sh!t and the future isn't looking too bright for the rice rockets. It's unfortunate it's gotten to the point where the state and federal governments are taking a look at it. That's never a good thing, but if these folks can't police themselves our fearless leaders will figure out a way to punish everyone based on the actions of a few.

If it makes anybody feel any better, I think it's going on all over the country.

Florida recently enacted a law where a rider's/driver's vehicle can be confiscated on the spot when that driver/rider is found to be speeding in excess of 30 MPH over the posted limit. It's aimed directly at the crotch rocket crowd (and to some extent radically speeding cagers on the FL Turnpike). But I haven't heard of anyone yet actually losing their bike.

Doing this stuff in the middle of nowhere is one thing but unfortunately a lot of these folks like doing it on crowded interstates or other heavily traveled roads. I read about the deaths pretty regularly down here in SoFla.

Several weeks ago I was riding North on Hwy 8 from NC into Virginia. Near the Blue Ridge Parkway there are several tight 20 M.P.H. curves. I almost always take the curves very leisurely. To my surprise, an 18 wheeler (which I have NEVER seen on this stretch of road) comes around the curve in the opposite direction. He his using about 2/3 of my lane. No problem as I am going at or below the speed limit, but made my butt pucker up none the less. About 3 curves later, going in the same direction as the 18 wheeler, 5 or 6 rice rockets come screaming through the curve. I can only guess, but I estimate their speed at 60 M.P.H. or better. I can only imagine what happened 1/2 mile ahead of them when they came upon the 18 wheeler doing 10 M.P.H.

I don't know about every state, but it is my understanding that in a fair number of states, getting caught moving at over 30 MPH over the posted speed limit would be grounds for being charged with Reckless Driving (or riding if on a motorcycle), and the driver/rider could actually be arrested by the stopping officer and their vehicle impounded.

Ride Safe!

I would imagine that it was then their turn to get all (ahem) "puckered up" a bit themselves as they likely had to hit their brakes hard to prevent slamming into the back of the rig!

Ride safe!
