If You Live In Deer Country...
please please please keep an ever alert eye out for them.
I couple on their bike struck a deer near here this weekend. The wife died and the husband is in critical condition.
I was on that road 45 minutes before this happened so it really puts things in perspective.
I'm actually very paranoid about deer. Everywhere, all the time because I've had a few close calls.
I'm more afraid of them than I am of cars. With cars you at least know where they will be. A deer can come out of no where or anywhere in a split second.
Please be careful.
My thought are with that family.

I second that.
I just got back from a ride to Mercer, about 800 miles round trip, and my head was always on a swivel.
My thought go out to the family.

Deer and drunks are the reason I never ride after dusk.

I don't know if I would call this deer country, but I see them a lot. I leave for work at 5am, and I just try and find a cage, and sort of shadow it, also using it's lights to look a bit further ahead on occasion.

Almost took one out a few weeks ago, or rather one almost took me out. They scare the **** out of me too and the bad thing is they don't have to be in front of you. I was cruising along in the cage one evening about 40 just coming into town. All of a sudden WHAM!!! I didn't hit him, he hit me. Ran right into the passenger side door. Sounded like a freaking bomb went off.
That kind of encounter scares me more than running head on into one on the bike. I think there's at least some comfort in knowing what you're gonna hit before you hit it.

Not to thread-drift my own thread but I read in the paper the other day about a guy who killed himself on his bike running from the cops.
He swerved into on-coming traffic and hit a guy head-on and died. Turned out the guy he hit was drunk. The drunk survived but got a DUI out of it.
Your two points above are why I don't ride after dark either. It's a shame really because some warm summer nights seem perfect for a ride.

Last year I happen to be filming a ride when a deer ran out in front of me.
Here's the link to the video.

The guy was actually a young woman, but it matters not at all. Riding around in the country in these parts after bar time is gonna get you killed — by a deer or a drunk. Yeah, I've seen your deer video. It's freaky.

I've hit two so far and lived to tell about it,they are a constant threat around here but as much as I worry about deer it's the elk that are really scary.

If you ever ride around North Bend, there's a resident elk herd there that are the town pets. And they have a habit of crossing the road at really inconvenient times. They scare me in a car; major pucker factor on a bike.

We got lots of them critters up here in Eastern NY...It may be my imagination, but I don't seem to notice as many on/near the road since I put the Big (Black) Radius Pipes on the Cross Bones...I know they're still out there lurking...waiting for the right moment to dash in front of or at me...
On a related citter note, I had a close encounter in June with a freekin Great Blue Heron..He came up out of a pond in what seemed like Slo-Mo & missed my shield by microns...
I swear I saw the dirt under his toenails...
