Mountian riding

Okay heading out in a couple of days and will be riding through some grades that will be in the 6% range.

So the question is how to handle the down part? Obviously riding the brake isnt the smartest idea or pulling in the clutch is probably not the best

So what is the best method?

Always use both brakes together. Just don't ride them continuously. Use both brakes and slow to 5 mph below the speed you'd really like. Then drop down a gear or even two so long as you keep the engine from over revving. This way you can accelerate through turns due to gravity in a lower gear than you would choose if you were on a level road.

Remember it is better to use the brakes to slow than just the engine due to the fact that the engine applies all of it's slowing power to just the rear wheel. In a corner or in rain it could cause problems. Slow before the corner and use even throttle or slight acceleration as you negotiate the curve.

Ease it, ease it, EASE IT. No hurry, no worry, ride beneath your skill level.

Use your brakes more than using the engine. Brakes are a lot cheaper than clutches.

A 6% down grade is no problem at all. Just letting off the throttle will slow you down plenty. Don't worry about it.
