Cleaning rear solid aluminum rim

My 2000 softail has a solid rear rim with black centre and aluminum edge... The black is fine but the aluminium has some calcium- like stains on it... I tried wet sanding it with the lightest wetsand paper I could get and it worked alright but I am hesitant to continue with this method... Any suggestions?

I had one of those at one time. The only way I found to keep it clean was to take it off the bike. I hated it! I had to clean it everytime I rode. 000 steel wool will work but the oxidation comes right back as soon as brake dust gets on it.
