use oven cleaner on hot pipes!! However, DO NOT spray it on the pipes. Spray it on a rag and wipe the hot pipes with it. The reason I say dont spray it directly on the exhaust is the over spray will ruin the finish on the motor, paint, etc...

Works, great, but I found out the hard way. Like he said, spray on a rag or sponge first.

Just make sure that the sponge is not plastic (some are). It will melt to the pipes. Don't ask me how I know.......

Get some .000 Steel Wool and it will take the marks off your pipes, and at the same time, polish them.

Since mine don't have heat shields eventually the rain gear meltage just burns away.

In addition to oven cleaner...

...I have used alumnium foil behind the pipe I am cleaning and to cover any parts below where I'm cleaning...creating a sort of gutter for runoff down to the ground away from the bike. Even with a sponge or rag, it will drip and spatter every so often. You don't want that stuff on your paint. Good luck!

I have used, very successfully, the oven cleaner that is designed to be used on COLD ovens. I used it on cold pipes and I left it on over night and the melted rain gear slid right off with no damage to the pipe.

Then I had the wife sew a piece of black denim on the inside of the right leg of the rain gear. This covers up the damaged area and prevents it from happening again.

.00 steel wool and windex works well. The .00 steel wool will not scratch and polishes the chrome at the same time with very little effort. Windex will not affect any other finish it comes in contact with. The same process can be used on the windshield of vehicles as well.

when that happened to me ..... I took the pipe off, took it outside the garage and sprayed oven cleaner on it and let it sit over night .... it took two applications to get it all off...

if you do this on the bike, DO NOT get it on painted surfaces !!!

spray it on a rag first, then wipe it onto the pipe, never spray that stuff towards your bike ....
