Duplicolor Wheel Paint

For those tired of trying to clean or keep the Cast Alloy wheels clean, this is great stuff.

I bought a 1998 Sportster with the 13 spoke cast wheels with the ussual road grime and corrosion and in no way could I clean them up.

I took them and a rear pulley in to have mirror polished and the guy asked me if I was going to paint the satin areas of the wheels....I just told him no, that I figured I could keep them clean after they were bead blasted.

Long lesson on cast alloy wheels and porosity was next and about how the wheel would just suck up anything they came in contact with, especially around the hub where it is hard to clean.

So I do the search for wheel paint, wheel coating and come up with Duplicolor Wheel paint, primer and clear coat. Looks simple enough so I ordered 2 cans of Graphite, 1 can or primer and a can of clear online.

Picked up the wheels and what a difference the blasting and polishing made.

The wheels need a good scrubing to get the polish residue off and wiped down with Acetone but they shine.

Pulley didn't turn out too bad either.

Masking the wheels is a PITA and takes sometime.

Painted, unmasked, edges cleaned up, overspray remover and polished with Mothers.

In short I sprayed 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of color and 2 coats of clear all in hte same afternoon. You need to spray the coats after 10 minutes but need to spray the next coat within 60 minutes or wait 5-7 days for the next coat.

I bought a second set of wheels and a pulley so the bike wasn't down or in the Indy shop in storage while the work was being done.

The wheels are down having tires, bearing and what not done so finished bike in a couple of weeks.

Ralston,

Thanks and I am alot happier with the bike with clean wheels that will stay that way.

Finally have it all back together and the wheel look great after a few more hand polishings to really clean them up.

I think it was money and time well spend myself.
