Remembering Alan
IN LOVING MEMORY
Alan Lee Salhus
October 20, 1955 - August 4, 2003
"I'm Free"
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free,
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work and play.
Tasks left undone, must stay that way,
I've found that peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things, I too, will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, my loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free!

Alan has been dead now for over two months now, and it has been very hard to post this because I have to embrace the sadness of his leaving all over again. Alan passed away from complications from surgery and liver failure. I would like to take a few words that were shared by his family and friends at his memorial service where hundred’s of family and friends attended. Alan was old school through and through. He had over 14 years being clean and sober, what a miracle. He is best remembered as being a man of few words. A man that stood over 6’5,” quiet but when he spoke everyone listened. A kind man, who would take the shirt off his back for a friend. If you were his friend, he made you feel like family. He had a style of his own. He attended church the last 6 years of his life with his wife and daughters. Because he felt how can you send your daughter’s to church..... without going yourself and practicing the word of the Lord. If the pastor at his church needed anything done, labor, money, personal time, Alan was there at the drop of a hat, just as he was there for his family and friends. He opened a sober living home in Los Angeles that served many suffering drug addicts. His greatest conviction and accomplishment in life was to help suffering addicts in need, and he was very humble about this. He would let addicts sleep on his couch at his home and feed them. There were men that no one else would take in for fear of being getting ripped off. Alan would take them in, but that was Alan. I think we all wonder what our funeral will be like when it’s our time to go. But I know in my heart, Alan was looking down from heaven so very pleased with his memorial and funeral service. It could not have been done any better than it was. And it was all due to who Alan was as a person. Alan’s personality, his convictions, his love of his family and friends. And most importantly his love of God shown clearly during his final weeks on this earth and at his funeral services.
Rest In Peace Alan

"Peace Be Thine"
We watched him slowly fade away,
We tried so hard to make him stay,
But, God was watching from above,
And took him home to share his love,
God knew that he was suffering,
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed his weary eyelids,
And whispered, "Peace Be Thine",
It broke our hearts to lose him,
But he did not go alone,
For part of us went with him,
The day God called him home.
WE ALL LOVE YOU ALAN... SEE YOU IN HEAVEN
