Today is the Birthday of Sam Helms, known on this forum as Highway_man. Coincidentally, Sam's last post on this site was 7/15/02. Sam would have been 50 years old today. He was the old HDF mileage leader for 2001. He traded his Gold Wing for a Harley and rode 27K miles in only a portion of 2001. Sam did this because he wanted to enjoy life with his wife while he still could. He was sufferring from cancer. The cancer returned in 2002 and dramatically reduced his ability to ride and due to the side effects he was seldom able to post on the interest. He could only lurk and smile. Throughout the ordeal, Sam was always positive and looking toward tomorrow.
Sam lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. His wife informed me of his passing and I posted about it here. I only knew Sam from the HDF, but I thought he was a courageous man, a man who did what he wanted and enjoyed life, all the time knowing the end was near. I've spoken about his courage and strenght on many occasions. With today being Sam's birthday, it's only fitting to once recall Sam Helms.
Happy Birthday, Highway_man.
