Crash kills woman driving motorcycle

KUAU - A 54-year-old California woman was killed Friday afternoon after a motorcycle she was riding crossed the centerline and collided with a truck on Hana Highway near Hookipa Beach Park, police said.
Melissa Zander of Glendale, Calif., was killed in the crash, police said. A 52-year-old Haiku man, the driver and sole occupant of the Nissan pickup truck, was not hurt, police said.
Police said the crash occurred at around 4:47 p.m. Zander was traveling toward Paia on the section of Hana Highway curving around the beach park when her 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle went left of the centerline.
Zander was not wearing a helmet, police said.
Maui County reported the highway was closed shortly after the crash, while traffic investigators examined the scene, with heavy traffic congestion reported in Paia and Kuau. Officers were able to divert traffic through Hookipa Beach Park until the highway was reopened at 9 p.m.
The fatality is Maui County's 14th, as compared to 15 at the same time last year.

We were on a long weekend trip to Maui and got to meet Melissa and her Husband, and their little girl briefly during a stop at Maui Harley-Davidson.
Husband was packing the daughter on a Heritage Softail while Melissa was riding a Dyna.
