NEW YORK - A young police officer shot in the face during a Brooklyn traffic stop has died, the New York Police Department said Saturday. Sources said Officer Russel Timoshenko, 23, was pronounced dead about 5 p.m. at Kings County Hospital.
He and his partner, Officer Herman Yan, were making a traffic stop Monday in Crown Heights when two people inside a stolen sport utility vehicle opened fire, police said.
Timoshenko, who suffered at least two bullet wounds, had been paralyzed, suffered brain swelling and was unable to breathe on his own. His partner, Herman Yan, hit in the chest and arm but saved by his bullet-resistant vest, was released from the hospital Tuesday. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Timoshenko died while on life support.
"The officer passed away on his own," Kelly said. "It is a very sad day for all of us."
Two suspects captured in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania were charged in the assault; a third man suspected of driving the getaway car is being held in New York.
The two suspected gunmen have made incriminating statements, Brooklyn prosecutors said. On Saturday morning, all three suspects were held without bail at Riker's Island.
