Brian Wegerle, the owner of H-D Johannesburg and major shareholder of most of the other H-D agencies in South Africa died in tragic crash on the N1 highway on Wednesday 13 June 2007. His bike was hit by a truck that went out of control and jumped the island between the lanes of the highway!
Brian was a "Jesus Freak" and he wasn't shy to express his faith anywhere. Many charities benefitted either directly or indirectly through HOG events championed by Brian.
When I went to look for a bike for my wife in 2002, Brian found me staring at a Night Train on the shop floor. He asked me: "Sir, what's you dream?" and that's where my story with Harleys started.
Brian lived the Harley dream flat-out. He was on most rallies and events I went on, and he was the guy hooting and waving at the kids next to the road while revving his Wide Glide.
I'm sure Brian rode his Wide Glide through the pearly gates already and is having a whale of a time in biker's heaven!
Brian will be sorely missed, but the memories will live on.
For the South African VTF members in the Gauteng province, there are mass rides from Pretoria (H-D Menlyn) at 13h00 on Tuesday 19 June 2007, and 14h00 from the Johannesburg dealership. The memorial service is at 15h00 at the New Covenant Church Cornerstone, Bedfordview.
Brian, ride your dream in peace!
