Heading South

A couple of days ago I made the decision to take off on a long trip by myself. I wish my fiance could come, but he can't take off from work. Since I'm still unemployed and the price of gas has come down, it seems like a good time to hit the road and see some old friends and family. Once I am employed, having the time will be harder. The plan is to head from Seattle to Portland, out to the Oregon coast to Coos Bay, back inland to Medford, down to the Bay Area for a few days and then on to Santa Barbara. I may head to Hollywood if my uncle is in town. Then back up to Seattle. I am hoping the weather holds.

Richard (the fiance), wasn't too thrilled with the idea at first. But he knows I'm independent and careful and that I'm an adventurous soul. Nonetheless, I'm checking in with him twice a day. And carrying. This will be the first trip I've taken that's longer than 350 miles. I'm really looking forward to heading south to warmer weather and enjoying the open road. I suppose some people may think it's nuts for a middle-aged woman to take off on a solo trip. But there's risk in lots of things and I'm not one to stay home and crochet.

Any other women here ever taken long solo trips? If so, I'd love to hear about it.

Sounds like a nice trip ,but being unemployed and having limited funds & resources you sure you want to travel???? I presume your riding,do you have towing resources if you break down???? Do you have money for emergencies that might arise????

Annie, have fun, ride safe, and I'm kinda jealous, buried in all this snow, I have PBS(parked bike syndrome).
Pics would be cool.

I do appreciate the concern, but I'm covered by HOG, AAA and my fiance. So I'm okay as far as emergencies go. And I'm keeping expenses low by staying with friends along the way. I wouldn't do the trip otherwise. I do plan on taking a lot of pics and not pushing too hard each day. And I'm taking my laptop so that I can keep on job hunting.

Absolutely the best time to do it! When I was between jobs in Nov 00, (I lined up a job to start shortly after the 1st of the year) I decided to go x-country. It wasn't on my bike, in fact it was b/c of the trip that I had wanted to buy a bike knowing that it would have been much better on 2 wheels. So, I went from MA to CA and back in about 3.5 weeks and it was a great experience. Later in 01 I bought my first motorcycle...

Enjoy the ride - as they say it's the journey not the destination...

Do it and live life. It'll be one of the best things you've ever done and will be filled with many memories. "carpe diem"
can't wait to see the pics, you might want to use photobucket.com and have them there for us and everyone else to see when you get back.

Well, I'm leaving on Wednesday. I've spent the day finishing up my iPod playlists (thanks to the guys who posted about the best guitar solos of all time), prepping the bike and making my final packing list. I'm packing tomorrow, then head out late morning so as to avoid commute traffic. I've been looking at the Weather Underground forecasts, and it looks as if the further south I go, the better the weather will be getting. Coming back, I hope I don't run into snow. I can always hole up with friends for a few more days if I have to. I am getting pretty excited about the trip!

You GO GIRL! I have to agree with the "carpe deim" mentality. Keep it real, respect your limitations and inner voice, enjoy the ride and know we're all with you in spirit!

When I do a "walk about" I keep in touch with the little Mrs. every day too. If that makes 'em more comfortable, it's a small price to pay.

I woke up to an inch of snow on the ground this morning. If it melts by tomorrow, I'm still on target. If not, I'm going to have to delay my start. And I'm a little worried about Grants Pass. Dammit.
