The BMW R1200RT??
I know it's not a Harley but: anyone happen to own this bike?? It's a newer version of the 1150RT. I might take one out for a test ride but wanted some info from owners about their overall opinions of this bike...

I've been curious about this bike. Thought it might make a good commuter bike. Heated grips, seats? abs, stereo. I am guessing enough power out of the box, big plus. Needs a trunk.
ABS would be nice safety feature when going to work on interstate. The heated gear would allow to ride more, nothing wrong with that.
I am curious how the maintance is on them. I think you have to ABS checked at dealer periodically, but can do rest yourself. Would really like to know about that.
How is the balance? I am 5'7" so its an issue.

I owned a 1150RT for 3 years. The 1200RT is lighter, has more HP & TQ, available with cruise control, adj windshield, heated grips and seats, ESA suspension, and lots of luggage capacity. It was a touch top heavy (compared to HD's) but nowhere near the larger BMW LT. My bike was reliable and I had an excellent local dealer. Dealer maintenance is a bit expensive. The aftermarket has plenty of accessories.
My RT served me well and if I was limited to just one bike for commuting/touring I'd be back on an RT.
regards
Additional: If your under 5'9", you'll not be flat-footing a RT with the stock seat.

I had an 1150 and it was a good bike. One of my riding buds has the rt1200 and I have spent some time on it. It is fairly tall so at 5'7" you will be tip toeing. It is a little buzzy at speed but handles really good and goes really good. BMW oilheads can be buzzy if the throttle bodies are not synced perfectly. On a recent trip together he was getting 50mpg when I was getting under 40mpg. Nice machine.

Before you shell out all that money for a Beemer, check out Yamaha's FJR 1300. I just bought one six weeks ago and it's incredible. 145hp and 90ftlb tourque. Smooth as glass and very comfortable. I comute on it whenever the weather permits.

I have an R11150RT and love it. I heard the 1200 is an awesome ride. BMW is very expensive if there is maintenance to be done on it. Kinda like HD's. 115 hp, it's about 540 lbs. Supposed to be a great ride. Went to the motorcycle expo this wekend in Phoenix. Check out the new Moto Guzzi sport touring bike. It's about 3k cheaper and a great looking bike. Haven't seen any write-ups on it yet.

My brother-in-law in New Jersey has the 1200 and seems to love it. He's a big guy and brags about it's speed.

You can do the maintenance yourself. In fact, there's a lot of help on the BMW sport touring website.

Nice looking bike. I definitely buy one before a Gold Wing. I've always like the BMW bikes.
Does it run out of the box of do you need to remap the fuel and do a stage 1 so it runs right?
Does BMW offer $30k in chrome upgrades?

The R1200RT is a wonderfull handling motorcycle with plenty of power.
My biggest beef is the brakes. The 05 and 06's have power servo assisted, complicated, difficult and expensive to service, linked, ABS brakes. The ABS is nice but the servo power feature is the answer to the question no one asked. Thankfully BMW has ditched them for 2007. You still have linked ABS.

I test rode an R1150RT a few years ago and didn't like it too much. Although it handled and rode great, I didn't like the notchy shifting, the quirky switch gear, and the dangerously grabby brakes. I understand BMW has pretty much addressed all these issues since then. I have no doubts that the 1200 is a great bike - I just don't like the angular looks.
Besides my Road King I have an 05 Yamaha FJR 1300. It's pretty hard to beat.
