VMAX anyone?
Might be putting an offer on a new 2006 Vmax later this week. I was quite pleased with the bike after checking it out in person finally. Not a huge fan of the foot peg location, but there not to bad.
Anyway, anyone have one? Likes, dislikes?
Thanks

fast, durable, and compfortable. ill handling, you will need to learn the carb sync trickery and final tune with an EGA.
back in the day, guys would install a sticky tire and run low 10's, i think they detuned it a little over the years.
wish i had one!!!!

It must have been broke. I ran 10.70s on a bone stock one, punched it out to 1270cc 13.1 compression, chain drive conversion, lenthened swing arm, 200 perelli and ran 9.30s. A 2100 cc v-max would run in the 7s easy. To bad you can't bore them out that much. Either a type o or he was jerking your chain. Bored and stroked there 1570.

I've owned Vmax's. Last was a new 03. If you pipe it you'll need to drill out the brass mixture screw plugs and richen it up some or it won't roll off idle. Replace front springs with Racetec or Progressive, put a solid fork brace on it and even some good rear shocks. Bike hasn't really changed since 1985. Here's the site for info: www.v-max.com Guys on there been fooling with them since 1985. Here's a friends tricked out vmax: http://cruton.bmg.uab.edu/ He's put 17" wheels with radials on his. Major difference in handling. They are fun bikes in a straight line and hairy around the turns....but that can be fixed. They are also a handful on wet roads.

Dunno, he looked pretty hard core so maybe he was jerking me around. Or maybe, like me, he couldn't ride fer chit at the track.

Thanks for the links.. With a new set of better grade tires and a quality fork brace, the handling issues would be much improved, eh?
I will probably put on new front and rear shocks at a later time.. No jetting or tuning it will be done as the power is more than adequate for me just as it is. I think i'm gonna end up with a 2001 with 4200 miles instead of the new one. I found what appears to be a really good deal on the 2001 at a reputable dealer...
I havent been this excited sence my 1st Harley... Ha

I have an 06 VMAX and really like it.
About 120 HP and under 600 pounds.
I made a summer windshield for mine so I get more air flow over the tank to help me stay cool. I took the std mini-III windshield and cut three inches off the bottom and I can adjust it on the sliders.
I have another one that's still full size that I use for cooler weather.
Go here for info.

I would add an oil pressure ga. if it doesn't have one because of the oil galley O ring that can blow out and cause oil flow problems to the top of the motor.
Nose around on the forum to learn more about that.
It's easy to fix to avoid having a bad engine problem later.
There is a kit with a bracket and new O ring to hold the pieces in place so the O ring doesn't bulge out.

I had a 2000 V-Max. Traded it in on my 2002 FLSTF. Personally, I always liked the looks of the V-Max. Two cons come to mind though: 1) you can't go very far before you have to re-fuel and 2) these bikes are NOTORIOUS for poor high speed handling. They have a famous front end wobble that I noticed anywhere fron 90mph and up. The dealer checked the bike twice and never found anything wrong. The V-Max forum is a great source of info. I don't think that just adding a fork brace will solve the front end issue. Lots of guys have replaced the front end with a modern sport bike front with inverted forks.

Updated in 1993
If anyone is looking at an older VMax, it pays to obtain a 1993 or newer. I can not remember all the upgrades...but for sure the brakes were improved as well as larger diameter forks. Still the same basic bike with improvements in the handling department.
Adding a front fork brace and commercially-available frame bracing (from lower down tubes to seat area of frame) will make a world of difference in handling. Remember we are speaking of an early 1980s-designed space frame with a torquey motor that can rev to 9000RPM.
These bikes can quickly exceed 125 MPH...with no fairing. In recent comparison tests the V-Max still matches or exceeds the newer hi-po cruisers performance-wise(VRod, Triumph 2300cc, etc). That is quite amazing for a 20+ year old design. The crude but effective V-Boost induction kicking in at 6000RPM only adds to the viseral rush...much like an old muscle car opening the secondaries on the 4 barrel. Add a quality 4into1 exhaust and there is no finer sounding cycle...HDs included.
While some newer crotch rockets can out perform a V-Max...they do so with neck & wrist discomfort only a young turk can rationalize.
Maybe the new Suzuki M109R will finally dethrone Mr. Max...but IMHO the V-Max will always be a milestone motorcycle...the first muscle cruiser.
And yes...I ride a Harley...but Mr. Max commands respect no matter what other type of motorcycle it rides with.
