Yamaha Virago 535
Any thoughts on these? Wife wants to try riding and it looks to be a nice easy to ride machine, and they're affordable to for a 8-10 year old model.

My ex and I bought a pair of them when we started riding back in 1987. They actually had two of them in the fleet for the local MSF beginning rider course. Nice bike to learn on, too small for any serious long rides. We both got Virago 700s (Harley tariff bikes) the next year.

Good bike for around town...but, anything over 55, and especially forget if the wind is blowin' over 10 mph. My first ride was an '83 Kawa 550 LTD, used to ride it on the highway, and would get tossed around (besides the RPM's were running nice and high at 55 MPH) 5 spd. Next bike was a '86 Suzuki Madura 700...huge difference...5 speed plus overdrive. I wouldn't go with anything under a 650, prefer a 750 for learning...JMHO.
About 2 yrs ago, I had a chance to compare my sisters '04 550 Honda Shadow, to her husbands '03 750 shadow...the 750 was hands down a much better bike. Once again, the 550 felt short a gear, and got tossed around on the highway, although it was very easy to ride (the only plus)
Don't know if this helps.

Good information guys...I started looking at the larger bikes (700-800cc) and they only weigh about 40-50 lbs more. I want the wife to learn on a cheaper bike to see if she'll stick with it...if she does I've promised here a Harley. Cdouthitt, thanks for the heads up that although it's aways away...going to PM him and see, plus look local. Appreciate the input!

Just started lookin for a learner for the OL too, I would prefer she gets something between 650 and 800cc to learn on. I looked at the 535 Virago, nice little bike but she would have problems keepin up on the Hwy. Virago used to come in a 750cc, might be the better way to go. I had an '85 Virago 1000cc many years back and loved it, great bike.
