That's a great bike. I have one (that I'm selling because I just bought a Vulcan 2000), and I tried the exhaust modification route. Mostly, since each muffler has two plugs (one front, one rear) that are already "swiss-cheesed", there's not much you can to do help by removing those. The thing that swallows the rumble is the "goat's bladder", or catalytic converter, located under the bike just in front of the back wheel. There are several techniques you can use to gut that bladder. It helps the sound. It doesn't help the low-end pull, although you don't lose a lot of low-end. It was a lot of work, and in the end, I wasn't happy with the results. I went V&H Straightshots, and they are a tad loud, but, I like it that way. V&H make some "quiet baffles that can be put in if the standard is too loud. I DID lose enough low end power with those pipes that I put a fuel adding controller on it. If you've never done work like that before, it seems a bit scary, but, it's really easy.
Good luck with what he decides to do. And, if someone around him gets the bug and wants a black 1500 Classic, with almost 3000 in extras, under warranty until Nov. 2006...look me up! Edit...actually, this bike is now on ebay, item number 260001533954. When it sells, if the new owner doesn't want the stock exhaust where I've gutted the goat's bladder, I'd be glad to ship it to him at cost plus 10.00.
