Sorry about the tangent. I say wave if you want to...I always do unless safety is an issue.

Wave
-at anyone on my road regardless of vehicle
-at any biker except the peddle pushers
-at anyone who waves first
-at any cute girls especailly when they're looking
Give the 1 finger wave
-at anyone who thinks by getting 6 inches behind me that I will go faster
-at anyone who wants to pass me on a double yellow when I am already going 10 over the speed limit
-at truckers who turn in front of you knowing you will about have to stop when there is no one behind you
-at any cager who pulls something stupid endangering me or other riders
-any jackass who passes a bus (happens a lot around here) who has the redlights out

I agree with your reasons but not the 1 finger method.. People have been shot for less.

I was riding through a small neighborhood the other day and I saw a guy about 50+ walking what must have been his father. The younger didn't have much attention to pay me but the old guy, as soon as he heard my pipes, stopped and looked for me. Like he was remembering the fun associated with the sound. As he focused on me as I was tooling by I gave him a great big wave. Just to pay him some respect and in appreciation. Nice experience.

Biker Wave in England
How's a biker wave done in the good ol' UK?? Riding in the left lane, kinda hard to wave with the throttle hand. I don't do the low wave thing, I raise my hand up from the grip. Some days it does get tiring.

I guess I'm The dick here. I used to wave at other Harley riders years ago when I felt like there was some type of common bond. Any more I don't have a clue what that person on the other bike is all about. just because they are on two wheels I feel no more need to wave than I do if I see someone driving the same brand of truck I'm driving

That is very cool. My father is 81 years old and he gets a kick out of younger respectful riders/ rodders. The way it should be, like the old days. "Respect your elders"
