Lightbulb Integrated GPS for H-D owners

Hi all,

I am currently developping an integrated instument cluster with GPS and track computer for sportsbikes, but we are considering designing a (low volume commercial) product for H-D's as well.

You can see a photoshopped image of what it would look like here:
http://users.pandora.be/compas/H-D.jpg

The device would feature:
  • GPS streetlevel navigation, voice routing
  • MP3 player
  • Std instrumentation, exandable with additional sensors
  • Trip computer (for using downloadable ball-arrow trips)

Now, here is the question: are you guys waiting for such a product, and how much would you be willing to spend on it ? Don't get any wrong ideas, your votes won't influence our pricing, but it might give us an idea if its economically feasable for us or not. As you can imagine, these things don't come cheap...

Thank you for your cooperation.

(ps, pardon my nick, but I picked it cause while registering, my other attempts where taken, and I knew that there wouldn't be many GSX freaks on this board )

You forgot one reply in your poll "No thanks, I've got something better & more functional"
Why integrate something when you could use this in many different vehicles, keep it if you sell the bike, a brand name company, proven product, ????

I should have added the first option, you're right.

But to answer your question; possibly because the garmin you linked:
- is not waterproof
- can be stolen so easily, you need to remove it every time you park your bike
- requires batteries or cable clutter
- doesn't play MP3
- doesn't provide radar warning for fixed speed traps (not an issue in the US I think)
- features a colour display (nice) that is almost impossible to read in direct sunlight (not so nice)
- depends on a touchscreen you almost can't operate with motorcycle gloves
- doesn't have a speedo input, meaning no usable navigation without GPS reception (tunnels, cities, dense forests,..)

and lastly: IMHO it looks like **** on a shiny cruiser. There are some other reasons too, but I can't reveal everything yet.

But the Garmin is no doubt a terrific product for in my car

Just try and get the right change from the counter person at McD's if their is power failure.. I think they still make maps dont they? and really how lost can ya get if you have to stop every 175 miles or so?

I'll drink to that. If the tank would be bigger I could get lost a lot longer. That kinda gadgetry goes nice with a Gold Wing or BMW Cruiser.........

Ditto.

I have used one on my Tiger for a while now. It snaps into the cradle on my Tiger, Boat and F-150.

Garmin 276C rocks!

That's the ticket. It's tough to beat the Garmin for versatility.

P.S. Can you say SPAM?

Indeed, no surprise, a version for the R850/1150/1200RT is high on our priorities list, but seeing lots of H-D owners here masacre the looks of their bikes with handlebar mounted radar detectors and Garmin streetpilots, I thought their might be interest there too. Maybe I thought wrong..

You didn't think wrong. Continue to develop it and make Harleys one of the many companies of bikes it will fit on.

Its just that "many" isn"t an option yet
Our system is highly integrated, thereby offering tons of advantages and features, but we have to design one practically for each bike. Custom LCDs, MB layout, casing, wiring, .. can't afford to do that for all mainstream bikes, we have to make choices.

Currently we're finalising one for use on fireblades, geared towards track racers and we've begun customization (and feature set expansion) for BMW R/RT. Next up is a goldwing version, and after that, we don't know yet. I'd really like to do a H-D version myself, but we'll see how it goes.

One thing is for sure, if we do one, I'll "spam" this site once more once its available

To those that voted for <$750.. sorry guys, can't do that as long as we don't sell as much as Garmin . Expect around $1500-2000 retail, but you'll get an awefull lot for that, MUCH more than just a GPS.

Although it sounds cool, I kinda like getting "lost". No worries but the next fill up. Makes for a relaxing day in my book.

I am sure if you built it, people will buy it.

Hell, 30 years ago heated clothing never existed and now people are making it seem like it goes with the bike along with wheel.
