Calling George Douglas!

Hey George! Got a quick question.........

I am getting ready to add a Milwaukee Dual Cool oil cooler and on all of the other threads mentioned that a thermostat should be added to prevent damage to the motor when the temp is less than 55 degrees outside. I am trying to add a manual bypass valve to use with the cooler, but they're just isn't any room to mount it on my Wideglide's front end with a chin spoiler.

Here's my question............. With the new synthetics, don't they protect no matter what the temp is?

If the answer is "Yes", then I can eliminate the bypass valve and have 4 less fittings to potentially leak!

Hope to hear from you (or anyone else who can answer this) soon.

It is true that temperature has less affect on synthetic oil than dino oil, but the main consideration here is that the oil might not get warm enough to make the oil change to it's proper thickness for the best all around protection. This would be more critical with dino oil, but in extreme cases it could cause some problems even with synthetics. Another consideration is one of condensation where the oil temp is never raised enough in winter driving to evaporate that moisture out of the oil. So in other words you want to keep the oil operating as close to the desired temperature as possible and that's why the cooler is designed with a by-pass. Now if you lived in a very warm climate and knew that you would never be in colder weather then you might get by without the by-pass. Cooler isn't always cool!

Buffy:

Agree with George. Before the days when thermostats were available, we just made a cover for the cooler out of leather and put it on during cold weather.

I am not sure it would fit your bike and it would be expensive but the oil filter mount from the 2003 Screaming eagle road glides has a built in thermostat. You may be able to buy the mount instead of the whole kit that HD sells.
