Downed bikers

Went to a local hospital to visit a husband and wife who even though I did not know them. They live close by me so I wanted to show support to the family.

While at the hospital I discovered that there were at least two other bikers (at a later visit I found out there where really three others) in the Intensive Care Unit. All with head injuries.
The couple made the news but the other three did not. I wonder how many other bikers are seriously injured in crashes that you never hear about.

The hospital I visited is only one of a number of major hospitals in the metropolitan area. Since it seems a number of badly hurt victims are airlifted to the hospital, those without a helicopter pad probably have fewer traumatic injury patients.

Even so, the numbers of downed bikers is numbing. I'm beginning to feel like an endangered species while riding which is never a good feeling.

Be safe out there all, we really don't need to overtax hospitals with downed bikers.

College started here this last weekend. There were a rash of motorcycle accidents and one made the front page of the paper today. Fortunately no one was killed but our law and health services were very busy this weekend.

My boss wrecked his bike last weekend and spent all this week in intensive care. He was wearing a full face helmet and padded jacket and still was torn to pieces. He broke both collar bones, his ribs, a scapula, and his back.

You should see his helmet. He would have been dead if he hadn't been wearing one. He is a great guy but a lousy driver. I think this is his 3rd bike wreck and about his seventh wreck overall since I met him.

He rear ended a Ford Explorer at highway speeds when the driver stopped abruptly in front of him. There really isn't any excuse for following that closely on a bike while traveling at highway speeds.
I can't imagine what he was thinking. He can't tell me either. He doesn't remember a thing.
