Custom bike builder Billy Lane surrendered to Florida authorities Sept. 25 after tests showed his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit during a collision that killed a moped rider.
Lane was charged with driving under the influence-manslaughter, driving with a suspended license and driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injuries. Toxicology tests showed that Lane’s blood-alcohol level was 0.192 percent, more than twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to authorities.
The charges result from a Sept. 4 highway accident in which Lane’s pickup truck allegedly struck and killed Gerald Vernon Morelock, a 56-year-old park ranger from Melbourne Beach, Fla., who was riding a Yamaha moped. Investigators said the accident happened after Lane crossed a double yellow line to pass at least two other vehicles before striking the moped head-on.
Lane at the time of the accident was driving on a suspended license resulting from a June accident in North Carolina, in which he had refused to take a blood-alcohol test (BAT) and was awaiting a court hearing on Oct. 4. Lane initially refused to take a BAT after the Sept. 4 incident, authorities said, but then complied when officers told him that blood work could be forcibly taken from him because this latest crash resulted in a death.
Two of the charges – DUI-manslaughter and driving with a suspended license in conjunction with a death – are second-degree felonies. If convicted, Lane could face up to 15 years in prison for each of those charges.
Lane on Monday was booked into Brevard County Jail but was released soon after he posted $15,000 bond. He issued a statement through his PR agency later that day, saying “We extend our sincere sympathy to Mr. Morelock’s family” and that he “will cooperate fully in the pending investigation as he recovers.” Lane and a passenger in his truck were injured in the accident.

VIERA -- Famed motorcyclist Billy Lane is expected to enter a plea deal Wednesday morning on driving under the influence manslaughter charges.
Lane could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of hitting and killing Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock on Labor Day of 2006.
Lane was attempting to pass two vehicles on A1A when he crossed the double yellow line and hit Morelock head on.
Lane's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
Lane's sentencing is set for May 29.

Part of the plea deal involved no jail time.

Well, he only killed somebody on two wheels so I guess it doesn't really count then.

Hell, Ted Kennedy killed a woman while he was driving drunk and he's a Senator. Sounds like Billy Lane is now qualified to be a senior senator from Massachusetts. Maybe he should run for the job now that old Teddy may be on his way out.

That's true but it doesn't change the fact that Lane killed someone as well while he was drunk, driving recklessly, and on a suspended license. He deserves some time in the pokey. His crimes should not be minimized. Michael Vick had his life ruined for killing dogs. Surely a human life is worth an equal penalty. Ole Teddy displayed his cowardice if you review the facts of his crime. He deserved jail time too.

No doubt Lane deserves time.
But Vick was sentenced for more than just killing dogs, I thought.
Wasn't part of that a gambling deal, and also running a crime ring?
I think if he had just killed a dog or two, he would have gotten a 50.00 fine and gone on with things.
A little different spot.
Still, I think it's a abomination if Lane didn't get any time at all.

VIERA -- The plea deal that motorcycle builder Billy Lane was expected to agree to Tuesday in his DUI manslaughter case didn't happen.
Attorneys on both sides could not agree to the terms of the deal.
The judge set a pretrial conference date for June 9. If Lane doesn't enter a plea by then, the trial could begin the week of June 15.

Honestly I didnt follow the Vic thing that close.
Thought it was just another young guy with too much money and hanging with the wrong crowd. I am sure there was more too it than just killing a couple dogs but the fact is Lane needs to do time and alot of it there should not even be a chance too plea. HE KILLED SOMEONE WHILE DRIVING DRUNK WITH NO LICENSE. MR. Lincoln I wish you were here the republic's changed alot in a hundred years Yea Hank had it right.

Choppers inc...
Actually, I don't think Billy Lane is a celeb in any sense of the word. In fact, none of the so called famous bike builders are celebrities. They are nothing more than guys who build motorcycles, and very few people outside our world know who they really are.
