I went a little further than my local stealer also....Chicago! 1800 miles and saved $1800 dollars after shipping. My loyalty is to my wallet...screw the local guys who when I was shopping were charging well over MSRP.

It's not the bike it's the dealer. There's more then one H-D dealer on the planet.

So when the locals are drinking beer and admiring each others shaved heads and gotee I'll be on the road.

Who buys used bikes from a dealer? There are a TON of great used bikes on ebay and cycle trader. People practically giving them away. Don't be lazy - sell your bike and buy what you want. If you're depending on any dealer to make you happy, you're going to be upset for a long time to come. You're going to pay 10% to 25% more than you should buying any used Harley from a dealer.

Of the people I know that bought used bikes from a dealer, it's generally newer bikes that the dealer can offer an extended warranty on. IMO those types are usually new to Harleys and have some fear of the bike breaking on them. My buddy just bought a used '06 Fatboy and did just that. I think in the long run you wind up paying almost as much a new one, and you get don't get the satisfaction of breaking its cherry.
thatoldbike is right about trying to sell your own. The dealer will lowball you big time.
Sonoffatboy, have you bothered to take a count of how many dealers we have in Northern Il.? If you are that close to Chicago, you're in the center of most of them for no more than an hours drive.

Dude doesn't really want a harley anymore. Sounds like one last bash on the way out the door to moped land. If he really wanted another Harley, he'd find a way & get one period!
Just an excuse...

Trust me, some dealerships ARE NOT customer friendly. I agree about shoping around BUT, you shouldn't have to!!
I'm a guy who wears "worn" out jeans, T-shirt, ect. When I went to one of the local dealerships and asked about prices on new bikes. They just kind of act like they don't want to bother with me. Maybe because it's the way I'm dressed?
Then they'll give you the, "what you riding now" question. When I explain to them I have a bike 3 yrs old thats paid for. And I could have bought "2" of anything they have on their floor now for what I spent on mine. They seem to have a different attitude towards an un-shaven lookin' bum.
****-EM' if they can't treat you with respect. I told the last salesman I talked to, "I could pay cash for anything you have here, but I'll go elsewhere to shop". I swear I couldn't get his lips off my ass!!
When I went to order the bike I have now the dealership I bought it from treated me with respect. Never once did I feel like they were looking down their noses at me. Every time I returned for parts, service, clothes ect. They always called me by my first name. And generally seemed intersted in how I thought their service/staff was. That's how dealerships OUGHT TO BE!!

If I owned a dealership or was a GM at a dealership that is one of the things I would pound into guys heads not to assume a guy who walks in the store can not buy what we are offering. There will be a time when the customer will have to show the cash, until then treat them all like they could pay cash if they wanted to.
I think it comes down to customer service, the consumer has a choice and if you are going to get their business you had better do what it takes to earn it.
