Hog

I broke down last month in NY. HOG couldn't assist me on the NY thruway. Some law. My extended warranty covered $200 of the $300 bill. Can I still submit for $100 from HOG? I did contact them when I broke down.

Generally yes. HOG is pretty liberal in reimbursing for towing up to the $100.00 limit. I woudl fax in your receipt, and I'll bet they'll get you yourr C-note.

NY Toll Roads

FYI- NY Toll roads contract with specific towing companies. These specific companies are granted exclusive access to their stretch of highway. The motorist has no other choices. Kinda blows.

NJ Turnpike is the same way..contract towers... AAA, HOG, no one could be of any help until the contract towing company had removed me from the NJTP. AAA did re-emburse me for all of my incurred expenses though.

I believe the NY and NJ toll roads, like the Mass Pike, are privately owned, or quasi-public (I think that's the term) and can make their own rules. The State Police patroling the Mass Pike are completely funded by the Turnpike Authority, including salary, uniforms, equipment and vehicles.

I did an employment stint on the Mass Pike about 20 years ago (so freaken glad I left!) and we toll attendants had full authority to DENY use of the road to any vehicle that did not conform to the standards set forth by the TA. This included over-sized, dangerous and uncovered loads. Bye-bye, can't use my road! ennis

Quasi-Public Roads

Gotta love them. The government just steals from you...these quasi-public roads steal from you to make a profit. I try to stay off any road that charges tolls, I pay enough taxes and highway usage fees to pay for my share. But I understand the dilemma that riders up north deal with. The NCDOT needs a new bridge over the Cape Fear River in Wilmington and want to pay for it by making it a toll bridge. The problem is that they say that much of the toll fees will be paid by tourists who are coming through Wilmington headed to Myrtle Beach. But the bridge will be built on the Lower Cape Fear River which leads directly into Wilmington, not connecting to the new I-40/US 17 Bypass around Wilmington. Our State "rocket scientists" at work.
