History of Catskill Game Farm
The Catskill Game Farm has been a family enterprise since its beginning in 1933. Millions of visitors have enjoyed the close contact of exotic animals in a relaxed, country atmosphere.
We exhibit approximately 2000 animals, representing over 150 different species from all parts of the world. Through careful conservation and extensive breeding programs, many endangered species have been preserved. Our efforts have enabled us to reintroduce nearly extinct animals back to the wild.
The Catskill Game Farm has been owned and operated by the Lindemann family for 70 years. Roland Lindemann founded this unique park in 1933. It started with a couple of white-tailed deer, donkeys, and sheep. He and his wife, Kathryn, continued to collect exotic species of animals. As the years went by, they added eating facilities, gift shops, animal food kiosks and amusement rides.
In 1958 the Catskill Game Farm became the first privately owned establishment to be recognized as a zoo by the United States Department of Agriculture. This status enabled them to import rare and vanishing species from around the world. The Lindemanns traveled the far corners of the earth in quest of new and unusual animals. The collection grew as huge importations arrived from Australia, Africa, and Europe. New sections for equines, bovines, birds, and African animals were added.
The special attraction at the farm will always be the contact areas where visitors may mingle amongst English fallow deer, donkeys, and baby llamas. Many people enjoy the opportunity to pet and feed these tame animals. Visitors delight in the animal nursery. Often the highlight of the visit is being able to bottle feed baby lambs, goats, and pot-bellied pigs. This has always been a favorite section at the game farm.
A half-mile train ride is available to take you through the bird garden and to the upper level. The train makes one stop by the cafeteria, and continues on to tour the rare goat collection. Memorial Day Weekend and July 1st through Labor Day, animal shows are presented daily.
The farm has a large cafeteria and snack bars throughout the park. Picnic facilities are also available. Parking is free.
Since 1989 the Catskill Game Farm has been owned and operated by the Lindemann’s daughter, Kathie Schulz, and her children Serena and Christopher.
