If you figure your personal insurance with roadhazard coverage in with your HOG membership as well as the bonus for having extended warranty coverage, it might be a hassle to send the bills everywhere but I think you will be surprised how much coverage you really have.

You know, after reading this I went back to the HOG site and re-read all their roadside assistance options. The Ultra/Ultra-Plus didn't sound too bad for the money, right up until this little gem:

You may qualify for the travel expense reimbursement if any of the following occurs: your covered motorcycle is disabled as a result of a mechanical breakdown of a warranty covered component (still under the original Limited Warranty or Extended Service Plan) and is 100 miles or more away from your residence; or your covered motorcycle is disabled as a result of a collision, is 100 miles or more away from your residence and repair is delayed overnight due to the unavailability of required parts.

So, since I don't have an extended warranty on my bike, I'd be left with towing to the nearest HD dealer, 35-mile radius towing on my cars (on which we already have towing insurance), and the usual complement of "dumbass remediation" services we haven't needed in over 20 years, like gas delivery, opening locked doors, and putting your own spare tire on.

I was all ready to reconsider dropping my HOG membership, but it's still just not worth it. Hell, even with a membership, we still have to pay extra to join the local chapter - which is why we never did anyway - AND an extra chunk for my wife to get her pin & patch.

I'm sure it's worth every penny to some people, but after being a member for a couple of years I just couldn't justify the membership any more. It's not the money, it's the near-zero value provided for the money. The trip planner is the only thing I miss so far, and I'm sure I'll get by somehow.

I'm glad I read this thread. I'm a new HD owner and moved into NH where for the first time I have Progressive. They cover everything for a $10 annual rider on the policy.

For $19.95 more than the Standard, the Deluxe gives you unlimited towing to nearest HD.
Sounds like a good deal, I just have the Standard pkg.. I'm not to concerned about breaking down.

JaimeWG's got a great point.

Plus, I was up in the mountains with a group of people. A friend of mine with an '85 FL broke down. 5 cell phones between us and no one had signal. Roadside assistance did us no good at all.

I have AAA RV Plus, but I got it for piece of mind for my wife, especially when she travels with our kids. In addition, I get at least $10 off a hotel. When your on the road on a bike, it's not easy to plan ahead and make reservations for stops along the way. So getting a discount on an impromptu stop is a benefit to me. Just the discounts, 10-11 stays pays for the membership for me.

I had a flat tire one evening travelling back from Charlotte. The entire tire came off the rim, so I couldn't plug it myself. I tried the HOG Roadside Assistance. I think I'd still be sitting there if my father in law didn't ride up to help out. The people on the phone were skeptical about helping me at 9:30 in the evening.

Besides - these bikes don't lock up like cars. Getting towed to the nearest Harley shop isn't going to get you much security. Unless you plan on sleeping on the concrete beside it until the dealer opens.

I also have the national HOG membership. I really like the trip planner.

All the years I have traveled in my life, if I broke down in my car or on a bike, I never expected anyone to bring me to a motel and put me to bed. Just saying.

I only saw one mention of Allstate RV. It is offered thru KOA at 75.00 for first year and 100.00 yr after that. They will tow anything with the RV coverage. I pull a bunkhouse camper with my ultra and they will tow the whole rig. It is a membership for 2 people and unlimited claims in a year. A lot of high mileage touring riders have this policy. I meet A guy on a IBA rally this year that owns A towing CO. He told me that when he gets a call from someone with HOG coverage he tries to tell them up front what they have as far as coverage (most are shocked). as well as most other towing policies. As far as the HOG membership it still leaves A bad taste in my mouth after getting screwed and seeing others get screwed by dealers in the 90s. Remember........... when you had to get on A waiting list to get A brand new Harley????? I was screwed by two dealers when they sold my new bike to A local HOG chapter member. This was the norm for most dealer during that period. There were even members getting several bikes ahead of people on the list and reselling them for 2000.00 to 3000.00 profit. I wont to this day do business with them. I could have been a charter member in 1983 and turned down the offer it really wasent the status Que thing to do back then. OK enough said ALLSTATE RV GETS MY VOTE.

That quote is for travel expense reimbursement. Towing is covered.

I just read my membership benefits book.

I think you misunderstood, and so far only Chuck1 has found the discrepancy.

You bike, no matter how old, if it is the bike you registered with HOG is covered. It will be towed (up to $100). As for those who complain about the $100? Hey, thats a hundred you wouldn't have to pay...Geez, give someone a beer and they complain if it's too hot/cold!

Like Chuck1 said....Only the travel reimbursement is limited to bikes under warranty.
